Summary
I am a printed circuit board designer with 14 years of experience and extensive technical
background in electrical engineering gained through many years of supporting production,
research and development, as well as hands on experience. This experience aids me in spotting
design issues prior to PCB fabricate thus eliminating PCB revisions. I am highly sensitive to
details and able to grasp technical details quickly.
I have extensive experience in these areas:
• High speed digital, noise sensitive analog and power supplies
• Signal integrity, EMI, controlled impedance, thermal, power, and timing
• High current and differential pairs
• High layer count rigid, and rigid/flex
• Mentor Graphics Expedition, Design Capture and DX Designer
• Windows OS, UNIX/Linux, Excel, Word, Visio, AWK, networks
Professional Experience
Space Dynamics Laboratory – Logan, Utah Jun 2003 - Mar 2013
Senior PCB Designer
• Designed high reliability PCBs for military and space applications with very complex
thermal and mechanical requirements, as multiple layers up to 18, rigid/flex with
complex shapes, via in pad, blind and buried vias, and micro vias.
• Networked effectively with electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineers.
• Provided support for reverse engineered PCAs, in the form of schematic entry and part
placement, component engineering, and documentation.
• Wrote scripts to verify designs, extract data, and check library parts.
Micron Technology, Inc. – Boise, Idaho Sep 1998 - Feb 2003
Layout Engineer
• Provided circuit board design and layout of PC motherboards and PCI cards with
schematic entry, engineering changes, and library part generation.
• Analyzed and assessed component placement and routing to reduce the cost of design
time and circuit board revisions required to address emission, power, thermal, and
production issues.
• Consulted with design engineers on inconsistent connections and components to reduce
the time required for board bring-up, debug, and circuit board revisions.
Hewlett Packard – Boise, Idaho Apr 1979 - Sep 1998
Research and Development Engineering Technician 1986-1998
• Proved specialized hardware and software solutions to support engineers in their research
and development. This included programming, engineering, designing, and building
items as test fixtures, interconnects, translators, cabling
• Performed vigorous testing of circuit board assemblies under extreme environmental
operating conditions to expose design weaknesses. This testing included data gathering
and analysis, trouble-shooting, rework, and interfacing with engineering teams seeking
results and solutions.
• Coordinated and implemented a PCA cost reduction program which resulted in an
average cost savings of 33%.
Production Engineering Technician 1982-1986
• Provided engineering support for production engineers as well as direct technical and
engineering support for production and production products. Responsibilities included
custom test tools and procedures, research, testing, redesign, technical writing, and cost
reductions.
• Tracked down and implementing a fix for a stepper motor drive circuit which resulted in
bringing down a very high field failure rate to near zero.
• Designed and implemented a new strategy and testing program to reduce product field
failures up to 50%.
Production Electronics Technician 1979-1982
• Provided component level trouble shooting of analog and digital assemblies. Performed
diagnostic testing of final production products and assured they met performance
specifications.
• Implemented custom test tools and procedures for production assemblies which reduced
test times up to 70%.
Education
• Electronics Technician program, Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho
• IPC, APEX, Howard Johnson, and Mentor Graphics trainings and conferences
Other
• Provide IT services for non-profit organizations, small businesses, and individuals
