PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVE
Independent and driven scientist with experience in drug discovery and development and space flight/microgravity,
looking for a challenging and stimulating environment that will help me learn more and grow as a research
professional
EDUCATION & TRAINING
Ph.D., National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, Mumbai, India
MSc (Microbiology)., The Institute of Science, Mumbai, India
BSc (Microbiology)., Ramnarain Ruia College, Mumbai, India
Ph.D. from National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health 1999 2006
Summary: Ph.D. dissertation on, “Molecular characterization of human sperm adhesion molecules using
polyclonal/monoclonal antibody and their role in fertility”, PhD advisor: Dr. K.V.R. Reddy. I identified gene
encoding a protein that was present exclusively in sperm from fertile men and absent in sub fertile. I developed
polyclonal and monoclonal antibody against the protein with long term plan to use them as bio markers of fertility.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Research Assistant Professor, University of Kansas Medical Center 2011 Present
Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Kansas Medical Center 2006 2011
Summary of research work:
• Non hormonal reversible male contraceptive drug discovery and development . We use small molecule
inhibitors as lead compounds to develop a reversible male contraceptive. Currently we are in the pre
clinical trial development phase.
• Determine effect of space flight and microgravity on reproductive physiology . Worked as part of BSP (Bio
specimen Sharing Program) team, where female mice were flown on three different space shuttles (STS
131,133 and 135). We determined that 12 15 days of space flight exposure alters female reproductive
physiology. The ongoing BION M1 mission will add more info.
•
Role of protein tyrosine kinase in sperm capacitation . We determined that sperm protein kinases play a
critical role on sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction.
Duties: Design and execute research experiments, write manuscripts, present scientific data at national and
international meetings, mentor trainees and research technicians and assistants, write grants
Skills acquired:
• Formulation of compounds
• In vitro and In vivo assays
• Studies in animal models (Oral gavage, SQ, IP in mice, rats, rabbits)
• Collaborate with medicinal chemists and protein chemists: SAR (Structure activity relationship)
• Mechanism of action of compounds of interest
• Sperm analysis (routine) and motility analysis using CASA
• Sperm egg/ sperm zona binding
• Mouse In Vitro Fertilization
• Tissue histology, Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence
• Spermatogenic index determination
• SDS PAGE/Western Blot,ELISA
• PCR and other molecular biology techniques
