Academic Achievements:
• BA in English Literature 1999-2003 at Al mustenseriya University, Baghdad, Iraq.
Experience:
1- Interpreter for the U.S. Army in Iraq for a period of 3 MONTHS in 2003.
My duties were to accompany the soldiers on their patrols and assist while interacting
with the local people. These interactions varied from minor requests for information and
assistance as well as negotiations with the local leaders.
Serving in the interpretation capacity was a very exciting experience for me due to
getting to know the American soldiers and also feeling I was contributing to building a
better future for the people of Iraq. Due to attempts on my life for assisting the American
soldiers, I found it necessary to leave my home in Baghdad in search of another job.
2. Cargo and Documentation Scheduler for DHL Dansaz Company (2004-2006).
My duties with Dansaz Company consisted of scheduling the arrival and distribution
of cargo. These duties also included working closely with contractors and managing the
documentation as needed to ensure timely completion of orders.
I found it very interesting to learn about the enormous amounts and variety of cargo
consumed by the U.S. military and contractors. I enjoyed the additional responsibilities
assigned to me in the critical nature of meeting the needs of the user. It became necessary
for me to resign this position due to the discovery of my whereabouts by the people who
had previously made attempts on my life.
3. Translator and Arabic Typist for the United Arab Emirates Embassy in India 2007 –
2009.
My duties consisted of translating Arabic to English and English to Arabic as well as
typing the translations to meet the needs of the Embassy staff. My thorough knowledge
of English Literature coupled with my knowledge of Arabic was crucial in being able to
accurately translate texts.
I found the Embassy staff to be the most impressive group of people I have ever had
the opportunity to work with. The nature of the work at the embassy was exciting as well
as demanding. I felt challenged and I looked forward to going to work each day.
After working at the Embassy for 2 years, the United Nations refugee organization
contacted me about an opportunity to emigrate to either Sweden or the United States. I
discussed the opportunity with my wife and we made a decision to go to the United
States. That was the hardest decision I had ever made in my entire life. We flew to the
United States in February, 2009 and made our new home in Winston-Salem, North
Carolina.
4. Cashier/Assistant Manager of Citgo Convenience Store in Winston-Salem, N.C.2009 – to
present.
My duties consist of working with the customers as they purchase products. I operate
the cash register, monitor customer conduct, monitor store supplies, stock the products as
needed, open and close the store, and balance the receipts.
Sincerely,
Samir Saleeh Hassan
