Qualifications

I completed my Ph. D. Studies in polymer chemistry at the University of the

Witwatersrand, South Africa. I am presently busy with my researches on

composite materials made with carbon nanotubes, a polypropylene polymeric

matrix and a natural fibre. I hold an M. Sc. degree of Science in the same

field. During the course of my research, I have been tutoring Maths,

Physics, Chemistry and Mechanics to first and second year engineering

students. Concerning my work, I was committed to design and synthesize

water-soluble polymeric structures to serve as carriers to which anticancer

drugs were to be attached by biofissionable links for deliverance to the

cancer cells. Water solubility was achieved by imparting such solubilising

group functionalities as tertiary amines and hydroxyls in the structure.

Three drugs were selected for this purpose, namely the antifolate

METHOTREXATE, purchased from the store, the organoiron ferrocenylbutanoic

acid, synthesized by a Friedel Craft acylation of ferrocene [di (?5-

cyclopentadienyl)iron (ll)] with succinic anhydride in mehylene chloride,

using aluminium chloride as catalyst, followed by a clemmensen reduction of

the keto-acid obtained, in acid, in a mixture of methanol, hydrochloric

acid, toluene and water, using mercuric chloride as catalyst; and the

platinum complex cisplatin, produced from potassium tetrachloroplatinate.

These synthetic processes involved such chemical subdisciplines as organic,

biochemistry, inorganic and coordination chemistry. Purification of my

samples was achieved by column chromatography and aqueous dialysis, while

their analysis was made possible by NMR, IR, UV and mass spectrometries. I

could establish the killing power of my samples by in vitro test on MCF-7

cancer cell lines. As a researcher, I have been a self-motivated

individual, able to work under little supervision, capable to establish a

professional work environment and to operate within a multidisciplinary

team.

I am fluent in both English and French: conversant in both languages.
