University of Arizona

Director of Clinical Research, 1987-1998

. Contracted with Cardiowest to develop the IDE Protocol and monitor the

nation-wide evaluation of the CardioWest C-70 Total Artificial Heart.

Designed the first successful, FDA re-approved clinical trial for the

world's first artificial heart. Device was taken out of trials by the

FDA and we had to redesign the trial and persuade the FDA to re-

approve our newly developed clinical trial. Designed the

randomization and control group strategy which was the first ever

cardiac device protocol approved by the FDA and implemented by the FDA

in other clinical trials. Was the clinical monitor in charge of the

trial and starting up 6 hospitals to participate in trial, including

design of data collection and storage for reporting purposes.

. Created the first profitable Clinical Research Center at a University

Hospital. Started with 1 heart valve study and developed into 22

clinical studies per year/ 3 M year for research and staff positions.

Accountabilities included contracts, budgets, subject information and

consent/approval, and managing the studies (paperwork, drugs, labs,

follow-up visits, monitoring and audits).

. Contracted with Shiley Inc. to create and conduct a national, FDA

approved follow-up study for patients who received the Ionescu-Shiley

Heart Valve.

. Created joint monthly heart valve clinic with Cardiologist, Cardiac

Surgeons and Echo lab for patient annual follow-ups

. Created a comprehensive database for all bypass surgery and pediatric

surgery patients, including: Follow-up studies. Clinical Outcomes,

Risk Stratification, and Quality of Life Studies.

. Trained hundreds of staff members in the areas of in nursing, cardiac

life support, clinical trials, clinical outcomes, and designing

clinical protocols.

University Medical Center

a heart assist device needing transport for cardiac transplant.
