OBJECTIVE: To pursue a career as a microbiologist or a medical scientist at healthcare

settings, or using my skills in biotechnology and medical microbiology in order to serve

biotechnology and / or pharmaceutical industries, appropriately.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

2011- 2012: Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Microbiology from the School of

Translational Medicine, at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

Coursework: Understanding bacterial and viral infections, Molecular Diagnostics, Clinical

microbiology, Global Health and Epidemiology, Research ethics and methodology,

Healthcare Science.

Research Experience: July – September 2012: Submitted my dissertation, based on my

laboratory exposure & assignment, as a part of my courseware, on “Identification of potential

virulence genes in various Klebsiella isolates”, targeting specific genes of the organism

which have been suggested to contribute to virulence in past research, amplifying them by

PCR after sub-culturing them, and checking their presence and significance in different

samples collected from different sites in patients, from the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

(Samples included both clinical and screening isolates.)

2007 – 2011: Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Biotechnology from SRM University,

India.

Coursework: Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Genetics, Molecular Biology,

Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Bioprocess principles and Engineering, Enzyme

Technology, Chemical process Calculations, Instrumentation and Process Control,

Bioreactor Design, Protein Engineering, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Environmental

Microbiology.

WORK EXPERIENCE / TRAINING:

December 2008 – January 2009: Worked at Bose Institute, Kolkata, Department of

Molecular Medicine, as an intern, undergoing training on ‘Basic laboratory Techniques’,

involving Protein estimation (Lowry’s Method), Western Blotting, ELISA, Gel

Electrophoresis, and Flowcytometry, under the supervision of Prof. Gourisankar Sa.

May – June 2010: Worked as an intern at The University of Calcutta, Department of

Biophysics, under Prof. Abhay Sankar Chakrabarti, on the “Effects of Fructation on

Myoglobin”, incubating myoglobin with fructose for a time period of 30 days, checking its

effects on a day dependent basis using UV Spectrophotometry and Gel Electrophoresis,

causing iron release and the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGE) which

affect free radical mechanisms and contribute to oxidative stress in Diabetes and related

complications (As seen in earlier studies on Glucose-induced modifications of

Hemoglobin.)

Jan – March 2011: Worked as an intern at Bose Institute Kolkata, Department of

Molecular Medicine, under Prof. Gaurisankar Sa, for my Bachelor’s Degree Dissertation

on “Effect of Curcumin on T-cell mediated adaptive immune dysfunctions in Tumor

bearing hosts”, involving injecting mice with tumor cells and treating them subsequently

with curcumin after 7 days, and monitoring the anti-tumor effects of curcumin, by

analyzing the cytokines released from cells isolated from the liver, spleen and peripheral

bloodstream of these mice, by FACS (Fluorescence Assisted Cell Sorting).

SUMMARY OF SKILLS:

Microbiology / Clinical laboratory skills: Bacterial cell culture, identification (from wounds,

UTIs, burns and Surgical site infection samples, supplied by the Manchester Royal

Infirmary), media preparation, autoclaving, Fungal and Bacterial staining methods (gram,

spore, acid-fast, Giemsa, India ink, Wright’s stain), Blood grouping, using latex agglutination

kits (eg: MRSA, Neisseria, Salmonella),familiar with serotyping (Salmonella), API strips and

analysis, optical microscopy, antibiotic sensitivity testing.

Molecular Biology: ELISA, Western Blotting, Polymerase Chain Reaction, Genotyping and

Sequencing, Gel electrophoresis, DNA and RNA extraction, Protein estimation.

Analytical Techniques: UV Spectrophotometry, Nanodrop Spectrophotometry, Fluorescence

Activated Cell Sorting (FACS).

point), experienced in searching bioinformatics databases like Genbank, Pubmed, EMBL,

familiar with the use of SPSS (basic level).

EXTRA CURRICULAR / SOFTER SKILLS:

Keen participant in social and humanitarian activities and an efficient team worker;

participated in Pulse Polio campaigns organized by Rotary Club of Calcutta Old City, acted

cultural fest “MILAN” at SRM University. Also, volunteered, as a team member, in several

events in the national level Technical fest “Aarush” at SRM University.

Academy, Kolkata), Folk Dance (Saurabh Academy of music and dance, Kolkata), classical

music (Allahabad Music Academy, India).
