I was the Industrial Hygienist at the VA Medical Center, Tuskegee, AL 36083 from February 8, 1988 to
September 4, 1994 before I was promoted to the Safety Specialist at the VA Medical Center, Montgomery, AL
36109. I became the Industrial Hygienist in 1995 until 1997 when Tuskegee and Montgomery merge into
one facility name Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System and I was selected to become the
Occupational Health and Safety Manager until I retired on February 28, 2013. Responsibilities include but
not limited to: (remember this covers all the positions I held in the Department of Veterans Affairs)
Establishing and maintaining within our budget that is $170K
Ensuring that all equipment under my jurisdiction was accountable for every year which was more
than $3M
Performing technical, administrative work involving program related to: Green Environmental
Management System (GEMS);Industrial Hygiene; Life Safety; Hazardous Materials and Waste
Management and Emergency Management to support a multiple facility with 6 outpatient clinics;
industry work; construction work and home based primary care facilities. Ensuring all programs
meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); Environmental Protection Association
(EPA); National Fire Protection Association (NFPA); the Joint Commission (TJC); Commission of
Accreditation on Rehabilitation Facilities, Collegiate American Pathologist (CAP) and other standards
as required.
Supervised an Industrial Hygienist, GEMS Coordinator, Safety Specialists, Fire Chief (15 manned Fire
Department at the Tuskegee Campus), and Program Assistant. And, hire an Emergency Management
Coordinator just before I retired.
Provide guidance, direction/technical assistant to all managers and supervisors with the ability/skill
to apply the knowledge in health care industry, which include maintenance, utilities shops as well as
construction workers. This include but not limited to:
Industrial hygiene evaluations, asbestos monitoring, lead abatement, hazardous waste
disposal, medical surveillance, waste; underground/above ground storage tanks permits and
Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Life Safety Codes by conducting the Basic Building Information, Statement of Conditions,
Plan for Improvements; pre fire plans for each building under the jurisdiction of the
organization; the fire alarms are functioning as required, drills are being performed;
inspections are made and documented to ensure that the staff understands fire safety.
Inspections include but not limited to fire extinguishers, outpatient clinics, and residential,
nursing, medical foster and homeless domiciliary.
Involve in planning, development, and construction phases of all new constructions; monitor
construction contracts for compliance with current Life Safety Codes. State buildings must
meet the International Building Codes as well as NFPA.
Coordinate the inspections of workplaces, community care, nursing, medical foster and
residential homes to ensure the safety of veterans placed in an environment that meets the
current Life Safety Codes. Also conducted a number of inspections due to the lack of
manpower.
Use and assist those in reporting and investigating all incidents that includes volunteer,
personnel and/or visitor injury, occupational illness or property damage.
Review current literature, research or professional studies to determine state of the art
methods and techniques’ for safety program planning/implementation.
Monitor compliance with program requirements, by conducting program assessments and
prepares report necessary to program continuity and reporting. Identifies problems and
negotiates corrective action concerning programmatic issues and basic financial management.
Monitor, evaluate and promote improvement in multiple or broad safety programs.
Analyzing existing safety matters; identifying needs for improvement, and the methods and
resources; providing this information in assigned personnel and persuading them to take
appropriate action.
Conduct the Safety (Environment of Care), GEMS and Emergency Management Committees.
Participate with the local Emergency Management Agencies meetings in two different
counties.

In charge of running the tuberculosis, venereal disease and hearing conservation programs.

Perform water sampling, which include: drinking water, swimming pools and ensuring that the facility was
keeping the bayou environmentally safe.
Supervise the Industrial Hygiene Program, schedule workload, make duty assignments and evaluate
subordinates.
Perform baseline/annual industrial hygiene surveys of industrial shops; collect and compile data, which include
but not limited to: effects of noise, ventilation, lightning, heat/cold stress, radiation, environmental and
atmospheric pollution.
