• 9 Months Internship in shell Technology Centre Bangalore
• Aim of the project: Design synthetic strategy for high surface area, high pore diameter and high pore volume
mesoporous material used as a support in catalysis. Incorporating a hetero atom in the material for catalytic
activity. Simple, easy to Scale up, reproducible methods. In the later part of the internship I was involved in
catalyst testing and physically involved in operations related to pilot plants.
Mentors: Dr. Laxmi Narasimhan (manager), Dr. Madhusudhan Rao, Dr. Vikrant Urade, Shell Technology
Centre Bangalore.
• Worked for CNCM (Centre for novel catalytic material).
• Catalyst synthesis
Design of experiment (DOE), synthesis of mesoporous material, surfactant chemistry, handling chemicals,
using muffle furnace for calcination, synthesis in HEL (computer controlled instrument for performing
reactions) programming and certification for running that equipment, filtration, Choice of surfactant,
Calculations and Hydrothermal treatment.
• Incorporating a heteroatom in a mesoporous material, Co precipitation, one pot synthesis, controlling the pH
of the system, pH meter, using Teflon reactors, hot plate, bulk preparation, hourly monitoring reaction, a pH
swing method for the incorporation of heteroatom.
Characterization Techniques used:
• Micromeritics (BET surface area measurement), Infrared spectroscopy, Raman, DSC, Mass spectroscopy,
TEM, NMR, XRD (wide angle and small angle), SEM EDX, ICP. Interpretation of the data from the techniques
used in the analysis.
• Catalyst Testing: Micro flow units having reactors in which catalyst is loaded and feed is tested on different
sets of temperature and pressure condition.
• Test plan, unit starts up and unit shutdown, P and ID of the unit (Pipe and instrumentation design), CBD
measurement (critical bulk density), Reactor loading, Pressure testing, Activation of catalyst, knowledge of
DCS (discrete control system), Supporting pilot plant team in all trouble shooting activities.
Past experience/and projects.
Challenges of the thesis problem Control the cluster size of SOMs and to observe shape morphism.
• Synthesis and design of Soft oxometalates (SOMs) using Paracetamol as a template (MS Thesis Title) under
supervision of Dr. C. Malla Reddy, Dr. Soumyajit Roy, Dr. Ayon Banerjee, Department of chemical sciences
and department of physical science IISER Kolkata.
• Choice of template, Synthesis of the material, Characterization, Excel log sheet of the entire experiment.
• Looking at the dynamics by putting SOMs in optical tweezers.
• Summer project in the field of crystal Engg crystallization techniques like solvent evaporation, solvent drop
grinding, vapor digestion and solid gas reaction
• Melamine and diacerene by Selecting different conformers in both the cases and using the solvent drop
grinding method for Co crystal formation. Analysis technique used were NMR, IR, single crystal and powder
XRD under supervision of Dr. C. Malla Reddy.
• Establishing the favoured geometry of C-H...O=C- interaction with CSD search (Cambridge Structure
Database)
• Small scale synthesis of Thiokol rubber Semester project for polymer course.
• Synthesis and characterization of Cu (II)-Schiff base Complexes (Salph ligands).
• Laboratory preparation of organic compounds purification and chromatography methods.
• Interests: Material chemistry, Inorganic synthesis, Heterogenous catalysis, mesoporous materials and
operating pilot plants.
• Computer skills: Windows, Chemdraw, Origin, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel.
• Other Skills: Teaching high school and intermediate students, Power Point presentation .
• Given power point presentation on various topics: Growing world of crystal forms (review paper), High
Pressure studies of pharmaceutical compounds and energetic materials, Carbon nanotubes loaded with
magnetic particles, N versus O arylation of aromatic compound, Synthesis of graft copolymers composed of
poly (ethylene oxide) as backbone and polylactide as side chains, Supramolecular polymers, Synthesis,
Structures, and Reactivity of Nickel Complexes Incorporating Sulfonamido-Imine Ligands. Extensive research
in reading papers for preparing power point presentation and clearing doubts at the end of the presentation.
• Language and degree of proficiency: English and Hindi (reading, writing and speaking), Bengali (learner
speaking).
Academic Projects
• Selected in extended merit list IIT JEE (2007), qualified al India Engg entrance exams, qualified state Engg
entrance exams 2007.
• INSPIRE SCHOLARSHIP: Eligible for this scholarship of Rs. 80,000 per annum from Department of Science and
Technology, India.
