SECOND SHIFT
LABORATORY CORPORATION OF AMERICA
1904 T.W. ALEXANDER RTP, NC
JUNE 4, 2012 TO PRESENT
Performed laboratory procedures in a level above a Senior technologist capacity in
accordance with standard procedures. Assist in the preparation of diagnostic reports by
Director or Pathologist. Responsible for auditing reports, checking folders, answering
questions, troubleshooting, scope training and specimen processing in the culture room
and at the microscope.
C YTOGENETICS DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR
DUKE UNIVERSITY HEALTH SYSTEMS (DUHS)/DEPARTMENT OF
CLINICAL LABORATORIES AND PATHOLOGY – DUKE UNIVERSITY,
DURHAM, NC
JANUARY 4, 2010 – JANUARY 4, 2011
Directly responsible for fifteen FTEs. Completed all aspects of laboratory operations
including personnel (scheduling weekly wet and dry lab rotations, approving time off,
training new employees, preparing mid-year and final performance evaluations,
administering disciplinary and promotional actions including hiring/firing technicians and
technologists), monetary obligations (responsible for 3.5 million dollar budget,
forecasting the need for equipment based on a five year plan), and regulatory obligations
(CAP, CLIA). Completed over 60 hours of Duke Management training classes.
Composed SOPs and reviewed them on an annual basis. Facilitated implementation of
new patient record database system. Participated on the Strength, Hope and Caring
Committee.
C YTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
IDAHO CYTOGENETICS DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY (ICDL)/
ST. LUKE’S REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER (SLRMC) – BOISE, ID
June 2008 – August 2009
(Small clinical laboratory that processes specimen types including
bone marrow, amniotic fluid, constitutional blood, products of
conception and solid tumors)
Microscopy, tissue culture, harvesting, slide making, imaging, karyotyping, accessioning
and reagent preparation as needed. As the specimen volume was very low, all five
technologists, including myself, were responsible for all aspects of laboratory operation
including workflow, maintaining licensures, CAP preparation, writing standard operating
procedures, and communicating directly with physicians and clients. I was one of a two-
member team solely responsible for the set-up, harvesting, microscopy and reporting of
solid tumors.
S ENIOR CYTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
GENZYME GENETICS –ORANGE, CA
May 1998 – June 2005
(Large, independent clinical laboratory that processes a wide variety
of specimen types including bone marrow and leukemic blood, amniotic
fluid, CVS, constitutional blood, products of conception and solid
tumors)
Examined the TRF (Test Request Form) for each blood, bone marrow, solid
•
tumor, amniotic fluid and CVS specimen that was received in order to ensure that
the correct tests were ordered, the proper sample was received/vacutainer tube
was used, and would recommend FISH studies to the referring physician if I
thought that it would further assist the patient. I also expedited certain STAT
cases and prelims. and would report the finding to my director so that the patient
could receive treatment immediately.
Drafted written reports and reviewed case details and karyotypes before sending
•
the completed case to the laboratory director for final review and send-out.
Contacted laboratories and referring physicians to obtain additional patient
information and to relay preliminary results.
Spent time at one of our newly acquired sister sites to train employees on the use
•
of the LMS (computer system used for report writing and data entry) and on the
PSI capture/karyotyping system.
Created a computer database from scratch – that is still used to log in and query
•
interesting case results (useful in report writing and training).
Monitored both wet and dry lab operations.
•
Wrote standard operating procedures for laboratory procedures and case review.
•
Trained new technicians and technologists.
•
Participated in any task necessary for laboratory operations – including
•
microscopy of all tissue types, banding, special stains, tissue culture,
troubleshooting, special projects etc.
Represented and served as a member of the safety committee for my department.
•
T EAM LEADER/CYTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
GENZYME GENETICS/ IMPATH /ONCOGENETICS - PHOENIX,
AZ
June 1995 – May 1998
TEAM LEADER
Evaluated daily specimen volumes and made action plans for the completion
•
of cases. Ensured that TAT was met or exceeded each day. Prioritized
compromised specimens, STAT requests, and “slow-grows.” Established
standards for testing times and mechanisms for work flow.
Reviewed case details such as the TRF and karyotypes before sending them to
•
the supervisor and lab director for final review for send-out.
Monitored and revised written operational procedures for tissue culture,
•
microscope analysis and an automated karyotyping system. Participated on
Methodology and QA/QC Committees. Reviewed and prepared proper
documentation for laboratory inspections.
Served as an ombudsperson on laboratory communication committee.
•
CYTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
Microscopy, harvesting, slide making, tissue culture, reagent preparation,
•
banding, photography (imaging) and kaytotyping of all sample types.
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and analysis of all sample types.
•
On-call rotation (after hours and weekend availability) for cytogenetic tissue
•
culture, microscope analysis and FISH.
C YTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
GENZYME GENETICS / GENETRIX / SOUTHWEST BIOMEDICAL
RESEARCH INSTITUTE - SCOTTSDALE, AZ
January 1988 to June 1995
• Microscopy, harvesting, slide making, tissue culture, banding, photography,
karyotype cutting, sign-out preparation, on-call rotation, reagent preparation,
supply ordering.
• Maintain frozen and fixed cell storage of bone marrow, unstimulated blood,
and tissue samples including handwritten and computer logs of storage
locations.
