EXPERIENCE
Senior Design Project 2012-Present
Failure Analysis of Lead-Free Solder Alloys – To determine the failure mechanisms and behavior of thermally
cycled lead-free solder alloys of varying composition.
Industry Sponsors: Richard Parker and Stuart Longgood, Delphi Corporation
Perform microstructural analysis and quantify intermetallic compounds present in the microstructure of six
different alloys of lead-free solder:
Prepare samples to be imaged in optical microscopes and scanning electron microscopes; samples
are mounted in epoxy and polished using traditional polishing techniques.
Samples are then observed by the team in optical microscopes and scanning electron microscopes.
Percent of intermetallic compounds are measured using computer aided analysis techniques.
Weibull statistics provided by the industry sponsor are analyzed and compared to results found by
the Senior Design Team.
Independent Researcher 2012
Grain Growth of MgO-NiO Alloys – To observe faceting in MgO-NiO ceramic systems as a function of composition,
sintering temperature, and sintering time.
Produced varying compositions of MgO-NiO
Pressed discs of different compositions to be sintered in a high temperature furnace
Polished as-sintered samples and observed with optical microscopes to view facets
Measured density of as-sintered samples
Summer Undergraduate Researcher 2012
Processing and Characterization of Lead-Free Ferroelectric Ceramics
Create tape castings of bismuth sodium titanate to determine processing effects on texture of the material for use as
a replacement for lead zirconate titanate.
Created tape casting of pure BNT from powders provided
Laminated small samples to be sintered
Developed sintering profiles to measure the effect on texture via GADDS measurement
Measured density to study effect of sintering profiles on densification of pure BNT
