ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Ground Source Heat Pump for Single Family House, 497E, UMass Fall 2012
• GSHP Project was part of the Thermo-Fluids Design course, and combined theoretical work with realistic
design.
• Used Heat Transfer knowledge combined with Fluids and new material about specific components.
• Designed all components of GSHP from ground loop to the heat exchangers.
• Combined all components to create a GSHP that delivered 15,000 Btu/hr to the house.
SAE Supermilage® Vehicle Competition, 497S, UMass 2011- 2012
• Team placed 5 with 843 MPG at International SAE Supermilage® Competition, Eaton Test Track,
th
Marshall, MI.
• Lead engineer for body design and vehicle fabrication, including chassis, roll cage, skin and overall
design
• Primary purchaser for the Supermilage® Vehicle Team and responsible for financial accounting of all
expenses
• Selected and ordered materials for the vehicle and coordinated with other teams for purchasing for all
supplies.
• Fabricated multiple parts for the car, using Bridgeport milling machines and lathes.
Bracket Design Competition, 313 Lab, UMass Spring 2011
• Worked on a team of three students to design and fabricate a C shaped bracket for in-class competition.
• Designed a bracket in ANSYS with the design criteria of having the highest strength to weight ratio.
• Fabricated the C-shaped bracket out of 6061-T6 aluminum stock on Bridgeport Milling Machine.
• Competed against class and teacher, our team had the most accurate model in ANSYS and placed 4th in
strength to weight ratio.
WORK EXPERIENCE
U.S. Army Natick Solider RD&E Center, STEP Program, Natick, MA Summer 2008-2012
• Conducted high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of phytonutrients in ration components
to determine their functional stability in ambient and accelerated storage testing. Compiled and analyzed the
results for the project manager.
• Performed in vitro α-amylase assays to determine effects of selected food extracts on glucose inhibition.
• Evaluated in field repairs methods for air-droppable potable water bags used by soldiers stationed at
forward outposts in Afghanistan.
• Utilized laser confocal microscope (LCM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to analyze Helicobacter
pylori’s morphological changes in support of funded research project. Operated equipment used for food analysis
in the development of new products, including colorimetery, water activity, rheometry, image and texture
analyzers.
• Studied replacement of mercury tilt switches for a Marine Corps tray ration heater to ensure that the
mercury-free switches met the operational requirements.
• Developed and wrote methods for determining the fat content in food ration items using CEM nuclear
magnetic resonance tool (NMR).
• Formulated several new ration components including, shelf stable sandwiches, tortilla wraps, energy
bars, gels, and meat sticks.
• Created both high calorie and zero calorie gels for use in medical caloric deprivation studies by USARIEM
medical professionals.
• Performed rheological analysis on carbohydrate/electrolyte drink concentrate using a Brookfield
viscometer to optimize flow properties for potential use in military canteen/drink packs.
• Updated annually all material safety data sheets (MSDS) for several chemical and food labs on base.
• Presented at NSRDEC Student Poster Session 2009-2012 covering key projects completed each summer.
