Graduate Researcher - Microbiology

As a graduate student, research plays a central part of my

academic career. Techniques accumulated as a researcher

include: PCR, Western Blotting, RNAi, measuring bioluminescence

in E. coli containing a reporter gene for copper

resistance, ribotyping and toxinotyping of Clostridium

difficile strains, and use of quantitray and MPN in

experiments as well as other applied microbiology techniques

Projects included:

"Assessment of the Potential for Cross Contamination of

Food Products by Reusable Grocery Bags" - Use of

several selective agars, quantitray system and most

probable number (MPN) for the enumeration of

coliforms, fecal coliforms, Salmonella, Shigella, and Listeria

monocytogenes in used reusable grocery bags and their ability

to survive such an environment.

"Survival of Bacterial Endospores During Household

Laundering" - Evaluation of the ability of Bacillus

altrophaeus endospores and, by association, other

endospore formers' ability to survive laundering and

the temperatures of drying in the absence and presence of chlorine

bleach.

"Survival of the Nematode Parasite Ascaris suum in

Biosolid Amended Soils" - Determination of the rate

at which the hearty parasite Ascaris suum perishes in

biosolid amended soils under different environmental

conditions

This position entailed teaching two separate classes, of 35 students,

laboratory techniques and experiments central to understanding

introductory biology. Other duties included preparation of and grading

quizzes as well as meetings with faculty to troubleshoot how to improve

the course.
