Skills Basic life support and advanced cardiac life support with interpretation of electrocardiogram,
spinal stabilization, and control of external hemorrhage. Sterile and aseptic technique, foreign
body removal, and skin biopsy. Administration of local anesthesia, debridement and repair of
simple and complex lacerations with suturing, stapling, and topical adhesives. Intravenous
catheterization and venipuncture, as well as intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal
injections. Preliminary assessment of routine x-ray studies, as well as basic splinting and casting
skills. Pelvic and rectal examination with PAP smear or stool testing for occult blood, as well as
foley catheterization of the urinary bladder. Collection of specimens including gastric content,
sputum, stool, urine, vaginal or urethral culture. Ocular exam with slit lamp, ophthalmologic
florescein staining with examination, and cerumen removal. Universal precautions as they
pertain to patient care and OSHA regulations.
