United States Steel Corporation, Great Lakes Works, Ecorse, MI:

• Responsible for ensuring plant compliance with Federal, State and local regulatory

requirements for an 1,100 acre site on an international waterway

• SME on Workplace Transformation that equates to a Blackbelt in other organizations.

Worked with plant operations, safety, and maintenance personnel to implement effective controls

to optimize plant performance

• Developed FMEAs (failure mode and effects analysis) and control plans to improve

performance of operations, eliminate environmental, safety processes and achieved compliance

with regulatory issues in less than 6 months for Clean Water Act compliance issues. Achieved air

emissions reductions by optimizing steelmaking operations

• Managed large-scale environmental engineering projects: PCB decommissioning; over

1200 tanks ( > 14 million gallons of oil), raw materials, by-products ($5 Million budget);

• Responsible for the asbestos decommission program ($10 million budget over a 5 yr)

Washington, D.C. Informed corporate management of potential and actual costs resulting from

proposed rulemaking.

• Performed environmental audits of prospective waste management vendors and audits of

potential company acquisitions. Advised management of the pros/cons of potential acquisitions

• Prepared Toxic Release Inventory reports, air permits, and National Pollution Discharge

Elimination applications/reports for divisions and one abandoned mining facility

• Developed corporate-wide environmental standard operating procedures for CFC management

and EPCRA audits. Responsible for the development and implementation of a corporate-wide

ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. Directly assisted with the implementation at one

integrated and one finishing facility. Result: achievement of third party registration.

1994 to 1998: Process Manager, Great Lakes Steel Corporation, Ecorse, MI

• Directed the activities of three engineers, the company’s waste, UST, PCB, Asbestos, recycling

and training programs

• Managed a budget of over $ 5.0 million a year for those activities. Led a corporate-wide Value

Added Supply Team that reduced waste management disposal costs by $5.0 million over a

three-year period. (NSC continued to save (> $ 10 million) from those negotiations)

• Developed salaried and hourly standard operating procedures for operations, utilities,

transportation and maintenance departments (8,500 employees)

• Monitored compliance using internal audits conducted by staff. Trained and tested shop floor

union employees to ensure understanding of environmental rules and regulations

• Key person in a four-man training program working with Director and Managers preparing 4,500

employees for a National Enforcement Investigation Center inspection Resulted in a cost

avoidance of potentially $ 100 million site-wide corrective action

• Directed the activities of contractors that performed remediation of contaminated property.

Closed eight of 10 UST sites and eliminated one-UST site. Saved over $ 45,000 per year in UST-

related costs. Recovered over $ 750,000 from state for leaking underground storage tank funds

• Participated in Great Lakes Initiative (GLI) activities with Ontario Ministry of Environment and

other Canadian governances to establish Total Maximum Daily (TMDLs) for the Detroit River and

tributaries

• Developed the RCRA training and contingency manuals. Reduced off-site waste disposal over

10,000 tons per month resulting in ~ $ 250,000 cost savings
