World Language Administrator – Assistant Principal, Columbus International High School
_2011-2012_
Assigned to assist the principal with in the implementation of an innovative World Languages and International Studies high school in this urban school district. The school is currently in its third year with a student population of 400 students. To date, five languages are offered. The administrator provides the expertise in second language implementation, language testing, the establishment of a language lab, as well as multiple duties connected with the day-to-day operation of the school.
World Language Administrator: Directly responsible for professional evaluations, curriculum and best practices implementation, student engagement, teacher professional development, establishing Advanced Placement in French and Spanish, liaison for the visiting OSU teaching assistant, establishing a criteria for developing Intermediate High language speakers, and bolstering the image of the importance of second language skills for the 21st Century living and working in a global community.
-World Language laboratory: Coordinated the implementation of a language lab for the 2012/2013 school year, gained teacher input, worked with vendors and purchasing, and made recommendations concerning the needs of the World Language program.
Intervention Specialist: Organized teachers and students. Completed the Board application for staff, payroll, scheduling of teachers and students, communicated with parents and guardians, and actively oversaw the way content was delivered. Intervention opportunities included coordinating teacher office hours, after-school on-line courses, after-school tutoring, and Saturday OGT preparation.
-Testing Coordinator: Implemented the schedule and process for World Languages oral exams, Explore/Plan tests, and the Ohio Graduation Test.
-Advanced Placement: Partnered with the Gifted and Talented liaison to win an Advanced Placement Network grant for the school. As a result, the International will scheduled student in five AP classes beginning fall, 2012: French, Spanish, Comparative Governments & Politics, English Literature, and Calculus. Recruited both students and teachers, as well as engaging parental support.
-National Honor Society: Commissioned the first National Honor Society for the International and recruited an advisor.
-Student Council: Took the fledgling student council to a more polished group through which students could organize fund raisers, school activities, elect prefects, and write a council constitution.
-Administrative Duties: School safety, supervision for after-school events, student growth and responsibility, academic oversight, data analysis, professional evaluations, meeting with vendors, community representatives, business consults, extended 10th grade field trip to Montreal, transcript analyses, and other school related requests by school officials.
Senior Administrator – Assistant Principal, Independence High School _ 2004-2011
Instrumental in the daily management of a high school in the midst of a major transformation initiative, working as a partner to the principal to bolster students’ academic prowess and the school’s ranking from “Continuous Improvement” to “Effective” with the short-term, realistic goal of reaching “Excellent “ status. Hold full responsibility for developing the scholastic year schedule for 950 high school students, working in concert with the principal to recommend course additions, ensure appropriate faculty coverage, and meet the needs of an ever-changing student and teaching body. Administer OGT processes, providing oversight to teachers and guidance counselors charged with one-on-one mentorship of seniors. Coordinate senior class meetings and plan the graduation ceremony, serving as a ‘go-to’ person when students need support.
-Senior Administrator for Graduation: Directly responsible for ensuring students were prepared to graduate: sufficient and appropriate credits, attendance, senior meetings, senior activities, career & college preparation, and graduation.
Credit Recovery: Administered this highly successful program, requiring assembling a teaching team, scheduling programming, assessing students, overseeing intervention efforts, coordinating logistics, and promoting performance. Played a critical role in propelling graduation rates from 70% to 98.8%, ranking in the top 5 citywide.
Post Secondary Educational Opportunities: Spearheaded a college credit program, working with Hocking College, parents, administrators, and students to define the process by which students could complete and gain credit for advanced courses. One of the most successful programs of its kind in the city due to participation rates.
