Academic Experience:

1. Was in charge of setting up of the “Doon Mariners Academy” at Dehra Dun, a

D.G. Shipping approved training institute for Deck Ratings, from July 2002 – Jan

2003. The work involved setting up the Institute from scratch, organizing all

infrastructure and equipment as required by DG guidelines, preparing detailed

course curriculum, notes and hand outs, lesson plans for the entire program, as well

as liaising with DG Shipping for final approval, etc.

2. Participated as a Trainer in the Autonomous Shipboard Professional (ASP) training

program for deck cadets at Tolani Maritime Institute, Induri, in July 2007. The

program was carried out by OMI Corporation, under the aegis of ‘Kessels & Smit’,

Netherlands. The training program was aimed at increasing the professionalism of

trainee cadets, preparing them for a self-learning apprenticeship program while

serving on board vessels.

3. From July 2007 – March 2008, and April 2011 – Dec 2011, was an Industry Fellow

teaching MBA – Port & Ship Management at the University of Energy and

Petroleum Studies, Dehra Dun. Subjects handled were Chartering and Broking,

Liner Trade and Container Management, Carriage of Dangerous Goods, Marine

Enterprise Management, Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Management,

International Maritime Transport, and Overview of Maritime Logistics.

The work included developing and designing the course syllabus and curriculum,

lesson plans, preparing course notes and handouts, conducting internal, mid-term,

and final assessments, overseeing project work, monitoring summer internship

projects, mentoring, and preparing students for placements etc. The role also

extended to liaising with shipping companies for internship, industrial visits and

placements.

Ex-students have been well placed throughout the shipping industry with firms such

as NYK Line, Adani Ports, Dhamra Port, SRS-Relay Systems, Albatross ICD’s,

Interocean, Brisk Marine, Yang Ming Line, amongst others.

4. Presently registered as a Ph.D. student with the University of Petroleum & Energy

Studies, Dehra Dun. The research topic is titled “Employee Engagement in the

Maritime Industry – A Predictor of Performance, Safety and Retention Amongst

Indian Officers”. The subject has great topical relevance as it studies the correlation

between employee engagement and the outcomes of seafarer Performance, Safety

and Retention. It also analyses the drivers of engagement, performance, safety and

retention applicable to Indian Officers. The final thesis has been submitted in Feb

2013 for evaluation, with the Oral Defense scheduled for mid-April 2013.

5. Currently employed as Visiting Faculty at the University of Petroleum and Energy

Studies, Dehra Dun, for teaching maritime domain related subjects in the MBA programs

of Port and Ship Management, Energy Trading, and Logistics and Supply Chain

Management.

6. Published two research papers in peer reviewed journals as follows:

Professional Experience:

1. Have more than 32 years experience at sea, carrying all types of cargo such as general

cargo, bulk, chemicals, vegetable oils, products and different crudes.

2. The majority of sea going experience has been on oil tankers, predominantly

product and crude vessels, with both conventional and deep well pumping

systems. Very well versed with all type of tanker operations.

2. Have been in command since 1993, on bulk carriers, product and crude oil

tankers.

3. Have wide experience of all types of tanker operations including conversions from

dry to wet cargo, repairs, surveys, dry dockings, ship-to-ship transfers, etc.

4. Possess more than adequate knowledge of Vetting, Quality and HSE requirements.

5. Have a good knowledge of chartering and brokerage, container industry, insurance

and maritime law from my teaching experience as well as through my MBA

studies.

6. Have a keen interest in academics and research oriented projects, and am a fast

learner.

Other Abilities:

1. Have a good command over English, Hindi and Bengali, and can communicate well.

2. Very familiar with MS Office – Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Am able to pick up other

programs fast.

3. Am confident with public speaking, and can keep the interest of audiences.
