MED MINING COMPANY LIMITED: Senior Mechanic (1st JUNE 2006- 1st JUNE
2009)
RESPONSIBILITIES
TROUBLESHOOTING, DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIRS IN THE FIELD
. Here responsibilities depend on reports given by the machine operator
through the Mining Care unit. Normal problems encountered include: low
engine power, brake temperature high, brake stroke high, differential
oil pressure low, bucket bouncing, engine out-put power is not
constant (engine derate), gear not selecting, air shortage, bucket not
tipping or not coming down, hard/difficult steering,
steering/transmission oil temperature high, parking brake not
releasing, cannot start (fauty starters), broken pump drive and
propeller shafts, oil and fuel leakages, burst hoses, etc.
Mine Care calls me and gives me the location of the breakdown, the
type of machine which is broken down, and a brief description of the
problem.
I assess what tools are needed for the job and bring them with me to
the site of the break down.
Upon reaching the site of the broken down machine, I first perform
safety procedures by a) switching off the master/isolation key, b)
lock out isolation key and put on danger tag, c) put out-of-service
tag on steering column, d) chock the wheels with rubber chocks, e) I
perform the risk assessment for the job by reading and filling the
appropriate risk assessment form.
I then start the diagnosis of the problem by checking for mechanical
problems. If no obvious mechanical faults are seen, I then connect the
CAT ET to check for and diagnose faults.
Component change out such as engine torque convertors, transmissions
differentials, final drives, change of pumps (hydraulic, transmission,
steering and fuel pumps), compressors, hoist cylinders, front and rear
suspension cylinders. During major component change out: release hydraulic
pressure from tank, disconnect hoses and electrical harnesses connected to
components, support components with a fibre sling hooked with the required
SWL (Safe Working Load) to a forklift, disconnect drives connected to the
component, loosen and remove mounting bolts, remove the component
Change worn out components such as tracks, idlers, segments, cutting edges,
end bit and ripper tips on dozers
Change defective brakes and steering, transmissions, torque convertors,
defective pumps, final drives and defective hoses
Repair leakages on machines: during repairing of leakages, start machine to
determine the source of the leakage, which could be coolant, hydraulic,
engine or transmission oil. If the leakage is coolant, either replace
radiator core, replace the radiator core seal, replace leaking radiator
hoses or tighten clamps if they are loosened. If he leakage is hydraulic,
replace torn O-ring seal, burst hoses, tighten loosened clamps and
fittings. If the leakage is engine, check engine oil filter tightness,
check sump mounting bolts, oil filler cap, engine oil level for over
filling, improper mounting of engine oil breather, and take corrective
measures per manufacturers specifications.
Troubleshooting faults on broken down machines: Get description of fault
from operator, collect toolbox, go to field where break down has
occurred. Check warning lights if available, go to the diagnostic
monitoring system of the machine to check active codes (if available),
check manufacturer's manual to specify the fault details. When fault is
located, correct according to the description in the manufacturer's
manual. Possible fault repairs: replacement of fuel and air filters,
resetting speed sensors, removed or dirty electrical harness contact or
connection, bleeding of fuel system if air trapped in fuel system, low
hydraulic oil level due to leakages (parking brake pressure is low or
hoist system is not working)
Use CAT ET for troubleshooting of machines: During troubleshooting on
machines, I usually use the CAT ET. I connect the computer with the ET
software installed on it to the socket provided for the connection of the
ET to the CAT machine's Electronic Control Module (ECM). Some of the
major tests are pressure tests and cylinder cutout tests. The cylinder
cutout test is used on engine
Detect mechanical and electrical faults by using instruments that check
charging and starting circuitry, batteries, ignition and ignition timing,
fuel injection systems and speed control, cylinder compression, engine
condition, braking efficiency, and wheel balance and alignment.
Repair and maintain the hydraulic components of diesel and petrol/gas
engines
Perform repairs on equipment including Pistons, welding, hydraulics,
pumps, hoses, undercarriage,
