Saying 'Arrivederci' to All That: Quick Tools for Learning Italian
High-tech teaching tools like CD-ROMs have "revolutionized the industry," says Steven Donahue, who
recently created a computer-based system for teaching Pashto, a key Afghan language, to U.S. soldiers.
"You can actually pack in an entire language-acquisition experience," he says.
NEW YORK TIMES
Compressed Data; Electronic Primer for an Afghan Language

With speakers of Pashto, Afghanistan's most commonly used language, in demand in diplomatic and
military circles, a linguistics professor has devised a Pashto primer that teaches the language by phone
and computer.
Its inventor, Steven Donahue, a professor at Miami-Dade Community College in Florida, sent free
software and workbooks to United States senators, State Department staff members, officials at the
Defense Department and military intelligence specialists. He thought they could use the lessons to pave
the way in missions in Afghanistan, where about half the population speaks Pashto.
''Even if you know a couple of words, it opens doors,'' Professor Donahue said. ''It gets you out of that
category of being an ugly American.''
For soldiers, who have their own training program on his Web site (www.1usa1.info), words learned
could include battlefield (dagar), flag (bayragh), prisoner (bandi) or bullet (gwaley).
The program allows students to recite and listen to Pashto in lessons over downloaded computer
software or over a toll-free telephone number. Students can even use voice-recognition software for
basic translation from English into Pashto, and back again.

Linguistics professor Steven Donahue has developed software to teach Afghanistan's most common
language by phone or computer. He has sent free software and workbooks to U.S. senators and to the
State Department. He says he hopes it will be useful to those planning missions to Afghanistan. Robert

LAUNDERING LANGUAGE
A Web site developed by a professor at Miami Dade College will cleanse student papers of bad grammar, slang, and
misspellings.
By: SCOTT CARLSON
Steven Donahue complains that the trashy talk in pop culture -- the pervasive slang on television and hip-hop records -- is
showing up too often in the college papers he grades.
Mr. Donahue, a professor of English as a second language at Miami Dade College, has written an online program that
cleans up those papers by scanning them for inappropriate language and suggesting revisions.
His students can run the text of their papers through a program on a Web site he started, WriteNowABC, and the program
will pick out obscenities, slang, bad spelling, and incorrect grammar, and offer more-conventional alternatives. "Really
good" might be offered instead of "phat," "jewelry" instead of "bling bling."
12
The program may encourage the student to use more-complex words or varied adjectives. The average vocabulary of Mr.
Donahue's higher-level students is 2,000 words, "which is not enough," he says. "For the SAT you need 5,000. We're trying
to cue them in to make their writing more full."
Finally, the program will offer a grade report, from 1 to 6. Six means that the students are ready for college English 101.
Mr. Donahue says the program was born of frustration. Students learning English as a second language are absorbing trashy
language "almost by osmosis," he says. He worries that his students don't know that using slang can hurt their chances of
getting a better job.
The widespread use of shorthand and informal language in e-mail and instant messaging is only reinforcing bad habits in
writing, he says: "You feel like you've got your red pen in your hand and you're circling the same things over and over
again."
Mr. Donahue started creating the Web-based service in 2000. He would like to sell it to other colleges -- at a cost of about
$5 to $10 per student user -- and he has put out news releases promoting the software.
But for now, only Miami Dade uses WriteNowABC -- at no charge -- in its writing labs, where more than 3,000 students run
the program to evaluate their course papers.
Mr. Donahue admits that his program is not perfect.
In a demonstration, it did not recognize the slang "fly," which means, roughly, "great." Evaluating the term "hate speech,"
the program cautions that the word "hate" might be too strong. A portion of this news brief got a failing grade for, among
other things, poor use of adjectives and questionable use of the word "site." (The computer suggested "cite" instead.) Mr.
Donahue says that the portion also could have gotten a bad grade because the selection was too short; the program considers
the length of submissions in its evaluations.
"It's not intelligent, as we would think of intelligent," Mr. Donahue says. "It still doesn't know what the student is writing
about. But I sometimes get papers where I don't know, either."

Colleges Struggle to Offer Courses in Pashto, Language of Afghans and Others
By MICHAEL ARNONE
Driven by the war in Afghanistan, instructors at four colleges are scrambling to offer traditional and
distance-education courses in Pashto, a language virtually untaught in America but spoken by more
than 20 million people in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pashto is also the primary language of the Taliban.
Nova Southeastern University is developing its own distance-education course in Pashto, the
University of Pennsylvania has added a classroom course to its schedule, and Florida International
University is also considering adding a course.
In addition, Steven Donahue, an adjunct professor of English as a second language at Miami-Dade
Community College, assisted by Habib Tegey, who is the senior editor for the Pashto service at the
Voice of America and the author of several textbooks on Pashto, has created a distance-learning
dictionary of Pashto vocabulary. Florida International and Nova Southeastern are both considering
using Mr. Donahue's program.
Hoping to meet the new need for Pashto speakers, Mr. Donahue says his "dictionary on steroids" is a
13
"quick and dirty" field manual that students can use to learn 1,000 words of core vocabulary. It can
stand on its own or serve as a language laboratory for traditional classroom courses, he says.
Mr. Donahue offers students a smorgasbord of options for receiving their vocabulary lessons
