Career Features

Hindustan Zinc Limited

The Growth Path

Geologist 1991- 1994

Deputy Manager 1994-2000

Manager 2001- Oct. 2007

Sr. Manager Oct. 2007 - present

Geologist - July 1991 to December 1991 - Rajpura Dariba Mine

The ore body contacts are sheared, with shear width up to 5 m at places,

highly foliated ground. Mining methods used were /are VCRM, cut and fill

and sub level open stoping.

Responsibilities:

1. Geological mapping for Ore body delineation and correlation - both

along strike as well as depth.

2. Exploratory borehole logging for ore body delineation and grade

calculation. Preparation of sections and plans.

3. Structural analysis of ore disposition.

Rock Mechanics Engineer - December 1991-1994 - Rajpura Dariba Mine

Responsibilities:

1. Geotechnical mapping for support system analyses and design. Proper

support system was formalized to contain rock falls in the

developmental faces - Rock bolts and mesh. At places, for poor ground

conditions, steel sets were also used.

2. Correlation of Geotechnically similar zones along strike and depth for

better understanding of rock mass response to mining and for

developmental headings at lower levels.

3. Installation of MPBX, VWSMs etc, taking readings, updating the

readings, correlation of instrumentation trends with respect to mining

front etc along with physical observations of the stopes to determine

stand up time of shear in the Hanging wall and footwall for dilution

control.

4. Understanding the technicalities of back filling. Various experiments

were done for knowing the percolation and decantation rates in a fill

column. Models were prepared depicting actual stope dimensions and

fill rates for understanding the fill behaviour. (equivalent material

modelling to an extent)

5. Strength tests for different cement proportions (3%, 5% and 10%) for

different curing times for strengthening the plug in hydraulic

filling.

6. Water balance equations for knowing the amount of water in a stope

column during and after the filling is complete.

As a result of these works, the back filling parameters were put in order -

no problem of any kind encountered thereafter till date.

Deputy Manager - Rock Mechanics - Rajpura Dariba mine - 1994 - Dec.1998

Responsibilities:

1. Support analyses (cable bolting) for Stopes especially Cut and fill

(back and walls) and VCRM (Hanging wall).

2. Dilution control in VCRM and Sub level Stopes - This was done by

correlating the open stable span, the flow of shear (stand up time)

and the rate of mining.

3. 2D numerical modelling on Flac.

4. Support system optimization of a decline at Sindesar Khurd. The

consultant had proposed massive support, but the modifications

suggested helped not only in early development, but saved considerable

amount on supports as well.

Deputy Manager - Rock Mechanics - Zawar Group - Dec.1998 - 2000

The Zawar Group has five mines - with similar geological settings, but

different ground conditions. Mining methods are Longitudinal and Transverse

sub level open stoping without back filling.

Responsibilities: Initially was responsible for Zawarmala (Transverse Sub

level open stoping method, Balaria (Longitudinal Stoping and foliated

ground) and Baroi mines.

1. Support system analyses and optimization at different mines.

2. Determination of stoping parameters for dilution control through

controlling mining rates, blasting parameter etc.

3. Increasing the extraction ratio for Zawarmala mine. The stope widths

were increased that led to increase in extraction by 13% without

affecting the stability of intervening ribs. The rib pillar stability

is vital for global stability of a mine.

4. Risk analysis and remedial measures.

Manager - Rock Mechanics - 2001 - Oct. 2007

Responsibilities:

Additional charge for other mines as well - Now totalling 5 mines.

1. Identification and mass blasting of a few crown pillars at different

mines.

2. Numerical modelling on Flac 3d on a mine scale. A few crown pillars in

one of the mine had collapsed long back, resulting in anxiety on the

health of other stoped out and abandoned areas and global stability.

The model was so good that the predicted failed dimensions of the

crown pillars and the surveyed one were within 5 m (depending upon the

mesh size).

3. The models in each mine were calibrated to the ground conditions.

4. Stope design modifications for dilution and ground control.

Senior Manager - Rock Mechanics - Oct. 2007 till date

(Was number 1 in an internal audit done by the Vedanta group for best

practices and functioning of a department, among all the mines, located in

India, Zambia, Ireland and Australia)

Responsibilities:

In addition to the above mines (of the Zawar Group), additional charge for

three more mines at different locations.

1. Generation of strata Control Management Plan for all the 8 mines

2. Key player in enhancing the production from 1.2 Mtpa to 5 Mtpa. This

includes, locating the ramps and their dimensions, suggesting new

stoping methods to meet and sustain the targets with proper dilution

control, stope designing and sequencing. Optimization of blasting

parameters etc.

3. Weighing different back filling options for different locations (Rock

fill, engineered rock fill, Hydraulic filling and paste filling).

4. Communicating with senior government officials of Mine safety, Bureau

of mines and Ministry of Environment and Forest on regular basis.

Notable Contributions to the subject:

1. Numerical Modelling of a shear band on Flac 3d for better

understanding of rock mass failure process on a mine scale, with

multiple openings and strong depth variation. In the process, a novel

"C then tan ?" approach is used. The rock mass parameters are

determined from the extended 'Q" system, as against the prevailing

approach of using HB parameters as they have certain shortcomings. The

model results compare well with the ground instrumentation and

empirical equations. The above findings and work are summarized in an

article titled "Numerical Modelling of Two Stoping methods in Two

Indian Mines using degradation of 'C' and mobilization of '?' based on

Q parameters", authors - Nick Barton and S.K.Pandey. The article was

published in IJRMMS, Vol. 48, issue 7; October 2011.The article is

mentioned in the reference list of Flac 3d as well.

Citations include block caving, Coal and reservoir engineering.

The article was at the number one position for the year and at number 2 for

all engineering journals published by Elsevier.

2. Understanding and conceptualizing the movement/localization of the

shear band with respect to dilation and the excavation geometry: very

useful in proper ground support and over all stability. Concept of

shear failure in developmental headings (resulting in fatalities

worldwide) is not understood well till date. This concept enhances the

understanding, resulting in better ground control and reduced

expenditure in supports.

3. Understanding the stress scenario in Transverse Stoping method. Till

date, the Rock Mechanics aspects for Transverse Stoping are not well

understood. This work will enhance the understanding of these aspects.

Publication:

International - Title: Numerical modelling of two stoping methods in two

Indian mines using degradation of c and mobilization of ? based on Q-

parameters.

N. Barton and S.K.Pandey -International Journal of Rock Mechanics and

Mining Sciences, Volume 48, issue 7, pp 1095-1112.

A radical change in the way the rock mass is understood and analyzed. The

approach will be highly beneficial in assessing the rock mass response to

mining and or similar large excavations- in both hard as well as soft

rocks.

National - Various publications in national level conferences.
