To whom it may concern:

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of support for Ms. Anessa Martir, R.N. I have had the opportunity to

work closely with Anessa for the past three years in the Level Two Nursery at Texas Children’s Hospital. In

addition, Anessa cared for my own premature daughter when she was hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit

for approximately one month from August 22, to September 22, 2011.

Anessa consistently stands out from her peers as a truly exceptional neonatal nurse. She functions on bedside rounds

at the level of an upper level resident as she knows every detail about her patients, the consulting services who have

seen him or her, and the plans for the day. She usually knows her patients far better than the pediatric residents

assigned to their care, even if even if she only cared for these children since the start of her shift. Not only does she

clearly communicate her patients’ needs and clinical changes to the medical team, she is always willing to go above

and beyond what is required of her to make sure that her patients receive only the very best care and follow-up.

Anessa is also a team player. She is aware that many interdisciplinary services see and treat the patients she cares

for, and she does an excellent job communicating accurately and facilitating conversation between services.

I have also seen Anessa’s care for her patients through the eyes of a parent. I was very fortunate that Anessa was one

of the primary nurses who cared for my daughter Eleanor. When I came to the hospital to visit my daughter each

day, Anessa made sure she was always clean, dry and dressed in a new set of baby clothes. Anessa always honored

my physician husband’s and my requests as parents for our daughter, whether it was to play her soft classical music

in her isolette, or to obtain a breast pump at the bedside to make expression of my breast milk easier. Anessa also

made sure that we were aware of the plans for the day if we had not had a chance to speak with her physicians yet.

She was joyful at each small accomplishment my baby made, and she was consistently encouraging to us as parents.

My husband still speaks highly of the excellent care she gave our daughter.

I trust Anessa implicitly. Her acumen of knowledge is high. Her work ethic is excellent. Her compassion and joy for

her patients is infectious and makes working with her a pleasure. I am very sad that Anessa will be leaving us here at

Texas Children’s. However, I know that she will do well in any hospital NICU setting lucky enough to recruit her. I

recommend her to you with the utmost enthusiasm. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of further

assistance.

Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern:

The purpose of this letter is to provide you with insight into Anessa Martir’s work ethic and care of preemie

infants from a parent’s perspective. On November 2, 2011, my husband and I were very blessed to deliver

fraternal quadruplets, Emma, Olivia, Chloe, and Luke. After spending about two weeks in the Level 3 Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit at Texas Children’s Hospital, our children were transferred to the Level 2 NICU wing. That

is where we met Anessa.

At that point, our children needed to learn how to eat, breathe well on their own, and grow. Anessa consistently

demonstrated competence in caring for them. She was not intimidated by their apnea and bradycardia

episodes. She handled it swiftly and calmly. I cannot express how important it was for Richard and me to

observe her handle them calmly and competently. Our nerves were raw during that very stressful time of

waiting. Any stress we felt from any healthcare provider only magnified our worry and concern. Anessa’s

presence only calmed our concerns and never magnified them.

We began to notice that the children seemed to progress better under Anessa’s care. In hindsight, we believe it

was because she took the time to get to know each of their histories so she was familiar with what they could

do. Much of their time in NICU 3 was a trial-and-error process to see if they could breathe well with less

oxygen, eat well without oxygen, and eat well from a bottle. Anessa knew them well enough to know when they

were ready to progress further and not backtrack.

For those reasons, we asked her to be the primary nurse for our children. She graciously accepted our request

to care for our children during every shift she worked during our two-month stay in Level 2 of the NICU.

Anessa repeatedly demonstrated her familiarity with the children, alerting the doctors, nurse practitioners, and

therapists of any discrepancy in their behavior, appearance, or vital signs. She readily educated us on how to

respond to various situations that we may encounter at home. She kept us informed about tests that were done

on the kids. And she treated us extremely well, talking with us about the kids and how they were doing.

Richard and I appreciated how Anessa added her touch to her daily job requirements, exceeding what was

required and truly caring for our children and us. Any patient would be blessed to have her as their nurse.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

To whom it may concern;

We are the parents of triplets, who were born on September 9, 2010. They were born at

32 weeks, 8 weeks premature. Since they were born prematurely and very small, all 3 weighed in

at around 3 lbs; we had to leave them at Texas Children Hospital, NICU. This was one of the

hardest things we had to deal with. They stayed in there for a month, which was one of the

longest month we had to live through. During their stay, we had a lot of apprehension and

worries. We were of course sad to have to leave our new born babies in the hospital, but in the

end, we realized this was for the best. During their stay in the hospital, we had many different

nurses, doctors and care givers that helped us. We of course wanted nothing but the best care

givers for our children.

One of the nurses that we will never forget is Anessa Martir. She was one of the nurses

that took very good care of our babies. She always had a smile every time we would visit our

babies and she would always fill us in on any new development. She made us really feel

welcome in the unit, she made us feel at ease and comfortable even though we had to leave our

babies in NICU. Anessa always answered our questions, she always gave us updates and she

made us feel that she really cared for the well being of our triplets! She is not only a nurse but

she to is a parent and as a parent she understood how we felt. We felt like she took care of

triplets as if they were her own. She is the type of nurse that any family going through the

hardships of leaving their new born babies in the hospital needs! We will never forget Anessa and

we will always be thankful to her and the staff at Texas Children for taking care of our 3 angels.

People don’t understand that a bright and shining face makes a big difference in people’s lives;

Anessa has made a difference in our family’s life!

To a grateful parents of three!

To Whom It May Concern:

During the fall semester of 2010, I was a nursing student at the University of

Texas School of Nursing Health Science Center at Houston, and I was taking a

Pediatrics course as part of my core curriculum. Anessa Martir was my

assigned clinical preceptor in the Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at

Texas Children’s Hospital in the Houston Medical Center. I spent a total of 14

weeks with her.

Anessa is a fantastic preceptor and a wonderful nurse. She exemplifies a true

professional and knows how to deal with her patients and their parents while

teaching a student. I really enjoyed working with her, and I learned much from

her. At first, we worked on basic neonatal care and medication administration.

Then, we moved onto charting and time management until I could take

patients by myself. Anessa always stressed to me the importance of patient

safety.

Today, I am a staff nurse in an LVAD/Transplant ICU. From time to time, I still

fall back on my experiences with Anessa in my daily practice. I am very happy

to have had such an amazing teacher, and I believe that I am a better nurse for

the time I spent with her.

Sincerely,

Karen P. Barwald, RN, BSN
