R&D/Engineer

My responsibilities as the only R&D Engineer of the facility is to look for cost

reduction opportunities in all aspects of the company. These opportunities range from

proper product flow through the system to inventory management to facility design as

well as various marketing initiatives. In this position I have designed, developed,

built and implemented a kinetic robotic mechanism that uses no motors or electronics.

The purpose of this device to remove the excess water from the rim before it enters the

dry off oven. This has resulted in eliminating the need to have a person manually

evacuate the water out of the rim. In conjunction with the kinetic robot I designed a

water collection system that allows the machines to run the complete day without having

to shut the line down to empty vacuums. This system also extended the life of the

vacuums by 400%. As a cost reduction project I designed and implemented a machine that

processes and allows sifted used shot blast media that typically would had been sent to

landfill to be reused. This project saves the cost of dumping and has reduced the

amount of shot that we purchase. I designed a second kinetic robot that applies the

powder coating primer automatically insuring proper thickness and coverage

repetitively. This machine eliminated the need to have two people apply the primer

coat. I am currently working on the design of a machine that lifts rims in and out of

tank and automatically batch processes wheels into next tank with no personnel needed.

Old system needed a person to load and unload at each stage. The whole system consists

of 6 stages for 3 shifts. In addition to these projects I have developed a database

that streamlines the current processes including sales order creation, scheduling,

tracking, manufacturing, packing slip creation and customer invoices. This new system

works seamlessly from one operation to another reducing current paperwork redundancy.

April 2008 - Dec 2009 Whirlpool Corporation

Benton Harbor, MI

Prototype Services Manager

As the Prototype Services Manager, I manage 38 Model Makers and two Supervisors located

in two separate model shops. Our model shop services four different appliance

categories by producing initial prototype parts that are used in various stages of our

project process. Some of the manufacturing processes that we utilize in building these

prototypes include, Injection Molding, CNC Machining, Die design and mold design, Rapid

Prototyping with SLS and FDM machines, Sheet Metal Fabrication, Water jet, Laser

cutting, and various painting processes including wet and powder coating. After

accepting position I introduced Lean practices into our daily work by forming small

teams to look at continuous process improvements. Using the lean principles we

identified an area for cost savings by combining two of our model shops into one to

eliminate redundant processes and the minimization of storing duplicate materials in

two separate locations. We were able to move all employees work areas and the

machinery 2 weeks ahead of schedule and considerably under budget.

July 2005 - April 2008 Whirlpool Corporation

Benton Harbor, MI

Architectural and Design Manager

The essential responsibilities include supporting Contract Marketing efforts to reach

the architectural & design community and strengthen our specification position in their

projects. This has been accomplished through trade relations, marketing initiatives,

continuing education and designing kitchens, outdoor kitchens, laundry rooms and

garages to incorporate Whirlpool Corporation products. It involves working directly

and over distance with architects/designers, coordinating with advertising and PR

agencies, working with design associations such as AIA, AIBD, IIDA, ASID and NKBA,

coordinating initiatives with the contract sales and marketing organizations to provide

unique tools to influence decision makers into specifying our line of appliances. Some

of these tools include contractor channel literature, CD's, websites, binders and

online continuing education courses, and trade relationship/sponsorship programs with

various trade partners. Our group was the first Corporation to identify the Set up

strategic alliance with Google Sketchup. By producing over 700 3D- and 2D CAD and

locating them in the Google 3D warehouse we are able to offer a free tool that reaches

the influencers who purchase our products.

Because we deal mainly with Kitchen and Bath Designers, our group decided to become the

first Appliance manufacturer to earn our Associate Kitchen and Bath Design credentials.

These credentials allowed our group to uniquely leverage our positions as industry

consultants.

concept designs. Some of the major projects that I have been intimately involved with

for the dishwasher group include Tahoe, Soil Sentry, back wall filtration, clear bed

test units, design of the new lab and numerous spray arms and water delivery systems. I

have also volunteered additional time to support the design and development of the

drawer refrigeration project as well as support various presentations sponsored by the

different innovation teams and sponsors. In addition to these projects I have been

chosen by management to be a participating member of the Cleaning Divisional Attribute

areas of the facility to initiate similar efficiency programs throughout manufacturing.

I lead our group in a Cost Reduction Program that led the facility to over 3 million

dollars in implemented cost savings. During my tenure at the facility I was a member

of the management team that improved our EVA performance from a 10 Million Dollar

first 3-D Cad procedures, conceptualize new prototypes utilizing AutoCAD and animate

prototypes in 3-D Studio. I also created an automated drawing process which utilized

excel as the informational engine to drive commands through a script file which

communicated each line of commands to Autocad and automatically created the shop

drawings. The net result of this technology drove the drawing timeframe from 4 hours

down to 25 seconds. Other initiatives included the development of our pricing and

quoting processes for "Rack Supported Buildings".
