Specific Skills
I obtained my original (British) 2nd Mates Unlimited license with BP Shipping back
in the days before GPS and spent many years navigating vessels of various types
and tonnages, including square-riggers, through some of the world s busiest traffic
areas such as the English Channel utilizing only radar, compass and depth
sounder, which I believe has afforded me a more solid navigational background
than is the standard these days and has certainly enhanced my abilities in dealing
confidently with all kinds of busy-traffic and close-quarter situations.
Objectives
I am very interested in obtaining long-term employment with a company that will
enable me to upgrade my existing 2nd Mate's Oceans Unlimited license to Chief
Mate, to which end I have already completed 6 of the 9 STCW courses required,
including ECDIS, Voyage Planning and Advanced Watchkeeping at MITAGS in
Baltimore.
Education
1979 to 1983: Merchant Navy College, Greenhithe, England. Graduated with a
degree in Nautical Science and my UK 2nd Mate Oceans Unlimited.
2004: Passed the USCG exam and obtained my US Masters 1600T Oceans with
Sail Auxiliary and my 2nd Mate Oceans Unlimited.
2009: Completed 6 of the 9 required STCW courses for my CMM, as listed above,
at MITAGS in Baltimore.
Seagoing Experience
Nov 2008 to Aug 2010: Relief Mate with Cruisewest aboard the 100GT
passenger vessels "Spirit of Endeavour" and "Spirit of '98", sailing Mexico and the
Columbia/Snake rivers. (With 8 locks to negotiate twice weekly, this was a good
opportunity to further improve both my river pilotage and ship-handling skills.)
Apr 2008 to Jul 2008: Relief Mate aboard the passenger vessel "Empress of the
North" with Majestic America in Alaska, until Majestic went out of business.
Aug 2007 to Apr 2008: Chief Mate aboard the 100GT passenger vessel "Spirit
of Yorktown", with Cruisewest, sailing Alaska, the SF Bay Area and Mexico. In
charge of deck crew schedules and training, periodic appraisals, station bill
assignments, payroll, sea-time documentation and ISM compliance.
Dec 2005 to Aug 2007: 2nd Mate (Navigation Officer) aboard the 4,200GT
passenger vessel "Spirit of Oceanus" with Cruisewest, sailing Alaska, Siberia,
Japan's Inland Sea and the South Pacific. As Navigation Officer, it was my ongoing
task to plan and to chart all passages between Tahiti, Fiji, Guam, Japan and
Alaska, then back again twice yearly. I also became very familiar with the Nobeltec
and Microsoft Word/Excel programs.
Please note: References from both captains of the "Spirit of Oceanus" are
available on request.
May 2004 to Nov 2005: Chief Mate aboard the 100GT passenger vessel "Spirit
of Discovery" with Cruisewest, sailing Alaska and the Columbia/Snake rivers.
1996 to 2004: Married and relocated to the US. Self-employed while waiting to
obtain my US citizenship and then sit for my USCG exams.
Jun 1995 to Oct 1995: 2nd Mate aboard the 230GT sail-training vessel "Tole
Mour" with the Marimed Foundation. Saling the US East Coast and Nova Scotia.
Jul 1992 to Jun 1993: 2nd Mate aboard the 2,298 GT passenger sailing vessel
"Star Clipper", sailing the Mediterranean, trans-Atlantic and Caribbean.
Aug 1991 to Aug 1992: 1st Mate aboard the 1,589 GT Danish chemical tanker
"Mopa Kent", sailing Northwest Europe and the English Channel.
1986 to 1991: 2nd Mate and 1st Mate aboard various product tankers sailing in
Northwest Europe, ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 GT. Also as Chief Mate and
Captain aboard various square-rigged tall ships, including the "Golden Hinde",
"Lord Nelson" and "Malcolm Miller", mostly involved with sail-training.
1984 to 1986: 2nd Mate/Sailing Instructor aboard the 100GT Brigantine "Ji
Fung" at the Hong Kong Outward Bound School. Sailing the South China Sea.
1979 to 1983: Deck Cadet/3rd Mate with BP Shipping, aboard various crude and
product tankers, ranging from 20,000 to 273,000 GT. Sailing worldwide.
