Product Development Program Manager

Managed 8 LED array development programs (> 75% of companys product line) to successful completion thus far, including some custom-designed for specific customers. Led cross-functional teams in R&D, manufacturing, quality, & marketing to deliver LED array & LED emitter products from concept phase to new product introduction (NPI) & market launch. Used project management tools to help establish & meet tight deadlines in programs with fast-paced product development cycles. Created detailed program schedules with task timelines using MS Project, as well as manpower & capital resource plans. Effectively monitored task progress, risk analysis, & distributed meeting summaries on weekly basis. Worked closely with finance & quality departments to manage project cost & quality constraints. Periodically communicated to senior management via email, meetings, & program phase review presentations. Worked closely with international suppliers (piecepart vendors & assembly subcontractors) in Malaysia, China, & Taiwan, and with remote Bridgelux team members in Malaysia. Besides frequent communications via email & WebEx meetings, this involved travel to Asia periodically to discuss & successfully resolve issues there, & to assist with NPI transfer to production at contract manufacturers. Managed selection of original contract manufacturers for LED array production, based on cost, quality, & technical support criteria. Led efforts to successfully resolve solderability issue with several products. Effectively managed design reviews & DFMEA reviews for LED arrays & emitters, & worked closely with mechanical engineers during product design phase. Contributed engineering guidance during LED technology development, substrate design, & thermal analysis of new LED arrays, which required strong analytical skills & creativity. My work has resulted in 3 solid state lighting patents pending while at Bridgelux. One of LED arrays which my team developed won Most Innovative Product of Year award at Lightfair International.

Engineering Functional Manager / Product Development Project Manager

Successfully designed state-of-the-art LED emitters, from initial concept through to production transfer. I resolved broad spectrum of product development & operations issues, which involved frequent interaction with internal functional groups, suppliers & supply chain partners worldwide. Worked closely with internal engineering, manufacturing, & supply chain departments on production scheduling & resolving technical issues, which required substantial multi-tasking. As project manager, I defined, documented, & communicated critical path issues, timeline, & followed up on resolving these issues. Created & communicated detailed risk assessment report, with risk mitigation plans & action items. Led cross-functional meetings to review status & achieve key milestones. Created detailed GANTT charts using MS Project & closely monitored progress to expedite development & production transfer. Led team of mechanical & optoelectronic engineers & technicians on piecepart design & process development for these optoelectronic products. Worked initially in R&D lab & later at assembly subcontractor in Malaysia to successfully refine assembly processes to stabilize processes & improve assembly process windows. Successfully transferred new LED emitter product into volume production on schedule & near completion of production transfer for second LED emitter product at assembly subcontractor in Malaysia. Designed & executed a series of DOE (Design of Experiments) multi-factorial evaluations to continuously improve assembly processes at assembly subcontractor. Worked with outside vendors die development & wafer fab engineering teams to successfully resolve problems related to eutectic die bonding & thermosonic wire bonding, which included improvements in die structure & die fabrication process control. Worked with thin film metallized ceramic substrate supplier to refine design of substrate for optimal DFM (Design For Manufacturability), including optimizing the metallization structure for optimum die bonding & wire bonding quality & yield. Evaluated quality issues with eutectic die bonding process by analyzing die shear test results (shear strength & coverage %) and through X-ray inspection of die bonded on ceramic substrates. Worked closely with equipment vendors as needed at assembly subcontractor to successfully resolve assembly problems & to refine processes, in order to meet reliability, quality, & yield requirements for high volume production. This assembly process development & process refinement involved significant hands-on work at assembly subcontractor, including upgrading equipment, tooling, & fixtures as needed. Worked closely with several engineers, both internally & at assembly subcontractor, on design of all pieceparts to successfully optimize Design For Manufacturability for these new LED emitters. Evaluated piecepart supplier quality via thorough first article inspection & creating appropriate incoming QA inspection criteria & sampling plans for piecepart critical parameters. Visited external die suppliers as needed to evaluate their capabilities & to resolve technical issues. Worked with thermal characterization engineer to predict thermal performance of these products using FEA simulation tool, & also worked with technician to measure thermal resistance of these packages.

Director of Project Management

Managed development of state-of-the-art LED array products, successfully completing multiple projects on schedule. Supervised cross-functional team of mechanical, optoelectronic, & manufacturing engineers & technicians on product design, prototype fabrication & transfer to production. Created detailed project schedules & tracked progress using MS Project. Worked closely with materials & parts suppliers, as well as assembly subcontractors, as needed to insure that new products met all performance & quality requirements. Worked closely with equipment vendor developing custom tester, to insure new tester met all requirements. Developed all specifications for this custom optoelectronic test equipment, interfaced closely with equipment vendor during design & equipment assembly, & assisted with tester set-up on production line. Conceived three innovative product improvements which are now patent pending. Created product breakthroughs in the state-of-the-art, including worlds highest performance LED array products. Some new products won awards at major trade show in 2005, including Best in Category Award (for SSL products) & Technical Innovation Award.

LED Array Product Development

Developed set of LED array product concepts which reduce manufacturing cost, improve performance, increase reliability, & increase number of applications for SSL products. These concepts allow SSL products to be produced at lower manufacturing cost. Fewer separate parts are required to manufacture these products, which reduces total system cost by eliminating some assembly steps. In addition, one of primary parts required for manufacturing any SSL product is significantly less expensive due to innovative design, which also reduces total system cost. This set of SSL product concepts improves performance & increases reliability of SSL products by improving heat dissipation of these products. These concepts allow high power SSL products to be formed into 3 dimensional arrays, to be manufactured with fewer separate parts, fewer manufacturing steps, & the arrays may dissipate heat better than other SSL products. Because such SSL products can dissipate heat better, larger LED chips may be used, & these LEDs may be driven at higher currents, so new SSL product flux/LED may be higher than competitors products. This set of SSL product concepts has been patented, & patent rights have been granted to major LED manufacturer in exchange for 6 figure income.

Developed HASS reliability screening for fiber optic transceivers, which involved test fixture development, layout of test program user interface, & evaluation of different screening profiles. Evaluated mechanical compatibility of various fiber optic housings with fiber optic transceivers, which included test fixture development using solid modeling CAD. Evaluated mechanical compatibility of fiber optic transceivers with different fiber optic components. Worked with Singapore production engineers & product development engineers on transceiver port alignment problem. Evaluated fiber optic transceiver cold start-up problem.
