I am a dedicated educator who began working as a school aide in the alternative high schools. Over my nearly twenty years of service to the children of New York City, I have advanced through the ranks to paraprofessional and teacher at both the elementary and middle school levels, and later a district-wide administrator. My specific areas of expertise include special education with an emphasis on mathematics instruction for all learners. I am a nurturing educator who believes that administrators are responsible for creating and fostering a supportive learning environment which provides greater opportunities for students to learn new things in both traditional and non-traditional ways.

The Office of Student Enrollment is a central-based office which oversees the registration of students into New York City public schools in grades K-12. As the first Director of Special Education for Bronx enrollment, I oversaw the enrollment of students with disabilities into the over 300 schools in the borough. I managed a staff of 10-12 employees which included not only pedagogues but also clerical staff. I also frequently collaborated with New York City principals to create new special education programs which reflect the needs of students in the neighborhoods which they serve and the borough at-large.

August 2006 June 2007Special Services Manager Empowerment Schools, NYCDOE

The Vincent Brevetti Network of the Empowerment Schools Initiative served 26 schools in three different boroughs and four different regions, raging from grades pre-K through 12. As the special services manager, I provided consultation to network principals and their school teams on issues in the areas of Special Education, English Language Learners, Youth Development, and Health Services. I also functioned as the network teams Parent Liaison.

M.S. 821 is a middle school located in the Sunset Park section of the Brooklyn. As principal assigned by my mentor to the 7th grade, I supervised new teachers, handled discipline issues, met with parents regarding student behavior/academics and professional development sessions for mathematics teachers.

M.S. 399 is a middle school located in the Fordham section of the Bronx. While at this site, I supervised new teachers, handled discipline issues, planned/conducted parent involvement workshops and professional development sessions for teachers.

2002 - 2005 Special Education Teacher P.S. /I.S. 123, Bronx, NY

P.S. /I.S. 123 is a unique urban middle school with an early childhood component located in the Soundview section of the Bronx. Serving children of Pre-K, K and 1 as well as grades 6 through 8, the diverse student population of 1000 students in the years I taught there were 67% Hispanic, 31% African-American, and 2% Asian and Caucasian. At the time, the school provided many afterschool activities and services for the community through various programs hosted by both the school and community based organizations in the area.

1997-2002 Paraprofessional/Sp. Ed. Teacher P.S. 97, Bronx, NY

P.S. 97 is an elementary school serving grades K through 5 in the Eastchester section of the Bronx. The overall student population, of 685 students at the time I taught there was 30% Hispanic, 50% African American and 20% Asian and Caucasian. Serving a large immigrant population of students from countries such as Albania, India, Jamaica and Nigeria, this school succeeded in improving student achievement for the majority of its students.

1996-1997 School Aide P.S. 153, Bronx, NY

P.S. 153 is an elementary school serving grades K through 5 in Co-op City, the largest cooperative community in the world. A barrier-free school, the P.S. 153 community has had a reputation for providing quality service for students with disabilities. It also once hosted the District 11 Program for Gifted and Talented Students.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

As a paraprofessional, was exposed to many different types of services for special education students, including a successful Inclusion Model classroom during the programs inaugural year in 1998.

As a participant of the New York City Mathematics Project (NYCMP), received specialized training in Mathematics teaching by Teacher Leaders for Mathematics Success (TL=MS) program funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics. Also provided professional development for fellow elementary and middle school teachers during the NYCMP Annual Conference 2003 and 2004

As a school project leader, worked successfully at planning and presenting a proposal for a single-sex, mathematics and science-based school for young women, which was approved for opening by the Chancellor of New York City in January 2006

As Director of Special Education Enrollment for the Bronx, established uniform processes across 6 administrative districts in order to expedite the enrollment of special needs students, reducing the number of students awaiting appropriate placement to the lowest levels in recent history. I also increased the amount of special education programs offered to Bronx students through close collaboration with school principals, school psychologists, parents, politicians and other NYCDOE administrative offices.
