Nantucket Island, MA Golfers are not the only people that live on golf courses. Creating a challenging, playable experience does not mean sacrificing the environment and the surrounding habitats. We can cooperate and build a course, a community that we can all be proud of. Ultra-premium, ultra-exclusive golf clubs are no different than a local, public course. Each has paying customers that expect a certain level of service and hospitality. Our job, no matter the course, no matter the budget, will always be to exceed expectations. New Albany C. New Albany, OH Hiring caring individuals is essential. Caring cannot be taught. Employees can be untrained, trained, and retrained; however, a crew member needs to be motivated and rewarded so desired outcomes can be repeated and the golf course can improve. "Put yourself in the POSITION of
MOST POTENTIAL."
~ 2013 NACC Management Seminar "Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don't interfere as long as the policy you've decided upon is being carried out."
~ Former President, Ronald Reagan "A desk is a dangerous place from which to view the world."
~ Former CIA agent, author John LeCarre Achievement Time "Management is, above all, a practice where art, science, and craft meet."
~McGill University President, Henry Mintzberg "When hiring key employees, there are only two qualities to look for: judgement and taste. Almost everything else can be bought by the yard."
~Writer, Professor John Gardner "There are two kinds of Superintendents out there: those who stay late to hand-water greens and those who don't. More grass is going to die after 5:00 PM than before, remember that."

I do not believe in "doing more with less,"
but instead--doing the best with what we've got! It is hard to see, know, or tell what the golf course needs without first viewing the golf course. I do not like to sit at a desk. I want see firsthand how the crew is doing, how the turf looks, and how the greens are playing. I especially like this quote because turfgrass maintenance is also, above all, a practice where art, science, and craft meet. The position of Most Potential is not going to be in the club house, the pro shop, or the halfway house. It is likely going to be in the morning meeting room motivating the crew or on the golf course leading by example, working hard, and creating a playing condition that exceeds expectations. At the New Albany Country Club, we always strive to hire employees that care. Our motto for the 2013 season is "We care... and it shows." Though it seems simple, teaching someone to care is difficult, especially in the service/hospitality industry. Once we find caring people, the rest of the training is pretty easy. It's not 'rocket surgery.' We leave the golf course when we know that the grass is going to survive the night. If there is a chance of turf loss, we stay and water. Managing a golf course is hard enough. There is no benefit to laying awake at night, wondering if there is going to be grass left in the morning. Life is a lot easier when you have a crew that is well-trained and accountable. A crew that is trustworthy, takes ownership in their work, and does not need to be micro-managed is a beautiful thing. But it begins with recognizing and reinforcing positive behavior and effectively correcting negative behavior. It continues by appropriately motivating a crew to strive for their best.
