KROGER, INC. (Blue Ash Technology Center, from October 15, 2007 to June 13, 2008)
The Kroger Co. is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kroger (NYSE:KR) is one of the nation's
largest grocery retailers, with fiscal 2006 sales of $66.1 billion. The Kroger Co. spans many states
with store formats that include grocery and multi-department stores, convenience stores and mall
jewelry stores. They operate under nearly two dozen banners, all of which share the same belief
in building strong local ties and brand loyalty with their customers.
Application Programmer
ClipSmart - Created, developed, tested and enhanced a Perl application to fetch third party
electronic coupon files from a secure FTP server, validate and import the data into any of 32
regional SQL data base files, based upon the Division, encoded in the file name. Return files
containing status information are passed back to the third parties via the secure FTP server.
The end customers simply go to kroger.com, enter their Kroger Plus Card number and select
from their targeted eSaver coupons which are then taken off the bill and printed on the receipt
when they use their Kroger Plus Card at the Point Of Sale when they purchase items targeted
by the coupons selected.
Delete CC s Wrote a Perl program to run a Java program to check Loyalty DB s for Credit
Card numbers being used as ID numbers. It runs daily and purges any found by the Java
program. If it finds the Oracle DB unable to handle transactions, it reports the down DB to an
email list and moves on to the next DB to purge. This helps to keep our department compliant
with laws about Credit Card numbers.
DHRewards Runs a Java program and checks the resulting file. If it is correct, it
automatically emails the zip file as an attachment, notifies a distribution list and archives the
results.
Enrollment Rewards Modified the Kroger credit card signup program. If they signed up
from either of three specific banners and reside in specific States in two cases, they are
automatically enrolled in the rewards program.
Earth Day Reusable Grocery Bag Electronic Coupon I wrote a Perl program that gathers
login data from the Kroger.com site each hour, checks the loyalty card number to see if it s
unique, separates the information into one of 8 Kroger divisional system files and moves
those files to those servers for processing. Those servers see the files and load an electronic
coupon on their loyalty card so they can get a free reusable grocery bag. It uses a specific data
structure, called a hash, to insure the uniqueness of the offer and card number. Along with
this I wrote a Perl program that runs daily to gather statistics from the servers about the
numbers of customers served and creates an Excel file and emails that to a distribution list as
an attachment. All transactions are archived and all execution is logged. I also wrote a Perl
program to examine the log files. It does a case insensitive search for several keywords and
keeps track of the problems it s already found. If it finds a new problem, it emails that to a
distribution list.
