Abstract

The Diptera genus-group names of Camillo Rondani are reviewed and annotated. A total of 601 nomenclaturally

available genus-group names in 82 families of Diptera are listed alphabetically. For each name the following are given:

author, year and page of original publication, originally included species [and first included species if none were

originally included], type species and method of fixation, current status of the name, family placement, and a list of any

emendations of it that have been found in the literature. Remarks are given to clarify nomenclatural or taxonomic

information. In addition, an index is provided to all the species-group names of Diptera proposed by Rondani (1,236, of

which 1,183 are available) with bibliographic reference to each original citation. Appended to this study is a full

bibliography of Rondani s works and a list with explanations for all new synonymies arising from revised emendations.

Corrected or clarified type-species and/or corrected or clarified type-species designations are given for the following

DIPTERA GENUS-GROUP NAMES. II: RONDANI

Introduction

Camillo Rondani (1808 1879) was arguably the first great Italian dipterist. In the span of nearly 40 years, he

published almost 200 papers in entomological systematics and agricultural entomology, about half of which were

on Diptera. His taxonomic focus was primarily on Diptera but he also described new taxa of Acari, Hymenoptera,

Hemiptera, as well as of a few other invertebrate groups. Because of his importance to the field of Diptera

taxonomy and his proclivity for proposing genus-group names in that order, Rondani has particular significance to

the present series. We here review all the Diptera genus-group names proposed by Rondani, including emendations

and other subsequent spellings, giving the current status of each name and clarifying and solving nomenclatural

problems where they exist. In addition to the catalog of his genus-group names, an index of all Diptera species-

group names proposed by Rondani is given along with a comprehensive listing of his publications.

Biography1

Camillo Rondani (1808 1879) (Fig. 1) published almost 200 works, about 100 of which were on Diptera. Rondani

is best known for his taxonomic works on Diptera; however, his publications in applied entomology and on

parasites of insects are equally important. Rondani has sometimes been labeled in Italy as the Prince of

Dipterology, but his influence on Diptera was worldwide. Osten Sacken (1903: 145) had the impression that

Rondani had an excellent eye for affinities, as well as the discovery of leading characters, and in that, in this

respect, his natural ability was decidedly superior to that of Loew . Rondani s impact on early dipterology was

indeed substantial: during his 40 years of taxonomic work on the order (1840 1880; one work published

posthumously), Rondani proposed 1,236 species-group and 601 genus-group names (including, among the latter,

unjustified emendations) of Diptera, for an average of about 31 species and 15 genera per year.

Camillo Rondani [the surname is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable as if it were spelled

R ndani ] was born in Parma in northern Italy on 21 November 18082. The Rondani family were wealthy

landowners of rich and ancient origins, who could boast of having produced men of distinction as early as the

twelfth century. One of these is the well-known painter Francesco Maria Rondani (1490 1548). Rondani s

ancestors prominence in the area was such that they gave their name to the municipality of Mezzano de Rondani,

founded in 1395 near Parma. The family also founded the church of Santa Maria del Mezzano dei Rondani, which

allowed members of the Rondani family to receive prebends from the church.

Early years and education

At the age of eight, Rondani was directed towards an ecclesiastical career by his family, the vestments worn by

such students being a mark of high esteem and signaling the nobility and high social standing of their families. He

initially studied at home, but after a few years entered public schooling where he was mocked for his dress,

although admired for his intelligence and the ingenuity shown in his studies. At about twelve years of age, Rondani

came into possession of an Italian translation of an entomological volume of Suites Buffon. After reading it he

became captivated by natural sciences and started his first collections of zoological specimens from the Parma area,

spending a great deal of time identifying and classifying the insects he collected. He often took trips to the

countryside to collect and this passion for nature distracted him from his ecclesiastical studies. He often skipped his

lessons to collect, but always managed to pass his tests. He was able to get past most obstacles on his educational

path and eventually attended courses at the University of Parma. At that time, there were no zoology courses at the

university, so Rondani was forced to continue his entomological studies on his own. During the first years at the

Philosophical Faculty (a pre-specialization curriculum), he had the opportunity to meet the physicist Macedonio

biography of Del Prato (1881) is accurate.

Melloni (1798 1854). The relationship formed between Rondani and Melloni was both a solid professional one as

well as a lifetime friendship based on mutual esteem. In 1827, Melloni gave Rondani at that time 19 years old

two large boxes of identified butterflies purchased in Paris (Fig. 2), which represented a starting point for the

organization of his future entomological collection.

In 1827 Rondani took up juridical studies with the aim of starting a professional law career. During his law

studies, he participated in botany and mineralogy courses for pleasure. On one such occasion he met Giorgio Jan

(1791 1866), a teacher of botany and an experienced entomologist (he mainly collected beetles). Jan was

impressed with the passion for nature shown by the young Rondani. He taught him much about natural history,

gave him entomological material to study, and the two went on many collecting excursions together. During that

period, Rondani had free access to the library and natural history museum of Count Stefano Sanvitale. It was here

that he had at his disposal the fundamental natural history library and entomological collection of the Italian

medical doctor and zoologist Pietro Rossi (1738 1804), author of the 1790 Fauna Etrusca and the 1792 Mantissa

Insectorum, which together essentially formed the starting point for Italian entomology.

During his law studies, Rondani decided to put away his ecclesiastical vestments for good, thus abandoning the

family prebends. By 1831 he should have completed his degree in law, but his studies were interrupted by the short

February March 1831 insurrection in Parma. With more than one northern state rising up, Pope Gregory VII

requested Austrian troops to put down the rebellion.

A strong advocate of a unified Italy, Rondani led a party of 30 men during the insurrection. On one memorable

occasion he and his companions were trapped in a horse stable surrounded by Austrian troops but escaped with

their lives when led to safety through a back door. Not long afterwards, Rondani and his men, milling about in the

Market Square of the town of Fiorenzuola, witnessed the capture of some of the other Italian patriots by the

Austrians. With hastily made nooses around the necks of those poor fellows and threatened by the troops with

being hung from the balconies surrounding the square, the captives, townspeople, and priests of the church pleaded

with the troops. Rondani and his men, who had not yet been spotted, suddenly had an overwhelming desire to go

inside the church and hear mass. Although ironically many of them had never seen the inside of a church before,

this improvisational act of piety saved them from capture (Gallenga, 1854: 73 80).

Academia and other employment

The insurrection ultimately caused the fall of Marie Louise of Austria s government and the resultant institution in

Parma of a provisional government led by three citizens directly elected by an assembly. One of these elected

officials was Melloni, who was entrusted with Public Education. One of the first measures adopted by Melloni was

to provide the University of Parma with several new subjects; he offered the now graduated Rondani the Chair of

Natural History and gave him the opportunity to undertake appropriate studies in Paris. Rondani accepted the Chair

and traveled to Paris, attending several lectures of the leading naturalists of that time, especially the comparative

anatomist Cuvier. Unfortunately, just a few weeks after arriving in Paris, the Austrians rose to power once again,

and decided to move the Faculty of Law to Piacenza in order to diminish the number of politically active students.

Rondani was thus forced to leave Paris and return to his native home. Rondani did not move to Piacenza, but

instead abandoned his law studies altogether and decided to work in Parma with his brother Emilio (who had

previously been imprisoned by the temporary government) in the trade of colonial goods. Despite working with his

brother in commerce, Rondani was still able to observe many insects and even made notes on some new species.

In 1833 Rondani married his first love, Petronilla Musiari3 and retired from his business with Emilio the

following year, moving to her villa in the hills of Guardasone near Parma where he spent many years studying

agronomy and entomology; and, with Petronilla, reading poetry and studying the arts. The couple ran a farm in

Guardasone and, using his experience with agronomy, transformed it with dams and soil management and

improved irrigation systems. Unfortunately, Petronilla died only a few years after they were married whereupon

Rondani, despondent at the loss, focused all his energies on entomology. It was at this time that he began

researching parasitoids, considerably widening his scientific correspondence, in particular with Massimiliano

Spinola (1780 1857) and Giuseppe Gen (1780 1847).

Entomological work and politics

In 1840, Rondani became a member of the Soci t Entomologique de France and at the same time began

publication of a series of Memoria on Diptera, which helped him quickly gain an international reputation in Diptera

taxonomy and classification. Twenty-five parts to this series were published from 1840 1880. See Table 1 for more

details on the composition of these Memoria, which changed to Fragmenta for some parts between 1843 1850,

then changed to Stirps (or Stirpis) for those that appeared from 1866 1880. Another series (restricted to Italian

dipterology) was started by Rondani in 1845 (entitled Notas) and, after sixteen parts appeared, ended in 1869. See

Table 2 for a list of these parts. A third series, each paper labeled as a Commentarium, appeared for a brief period

between 1861 1862 and only consisted of parts 18 20. Other parts in this third series may have included papers in

the Memorias or Notas, but without information as to the history of these, it is impossible to know which papers

consisted of papers 1 17 of this series.
