I am a consultant advisor, supervisor/mentor/coach, and project development specialist to people

and organizations providing services for children in the social care sector. My service is available

internationally and in the last year I have worked with organizations and individuals in the UK,

Australia and Japan.

I specialize in program design and development for children and young people who have been

traumatized by abuse and neglect, and who require specialist therapeutic residential or foster

care programs.

My experience spans from 1985, working as a strategic director, operational manager, clinician,

consultant and author.

I offer services in the following areas:

Consultancy/mentoring/coaching for program Directors/managers.

Supervision/coaching/mentoring/consultancy for individuals working with children.

The design and implementation of treatment programs for children and young people,

particularly for those in therapeutic residential and foster care the development of

assessment and planning models; outcomes based approaches.

Specialization in developing programs and practice improvement, for children and young

people who have been traumatized by abuse and neglect:

Starting up new projects, programs, services from design to implementation;

Writing services for organizations the publication of books, papers and internal

documents.

I have the ability to create a long term vision and plan for its implementa tion and am experienced

in developing new programs and services. I combine vision with strong analytic capacity, clear task

focus and the ability to get things done.

I have been a manager and director for nationally and internationally renowned organiza tions

providing therapeutic programs for children and young people whose development has been

disrupted and delayed, and who:

are traumatized by abuse and neglect

have behavioral difficulties

have autism or Asperger s syndrome

are in foster or residential care

I hold qualifications to master s level in therapeutic child welfare, management and strategic

leadership. My knowledge and practical experience are extensive and I have published three books

and numerous papers on these subjects.

Position: Director and Consultant Aug 2008 Present

Achievements in this post:

July 2012 present International Practice Development Lighthouse Institute (Australia). To

support the expansion of the Lighthouse model in Australia and elsewhere. To provide

consultancy, training and supervision to people and organizations working with traumatized

children.

March 2012 present Project Consultancy for a UK provider of Therapeutic Care and

Education to develop their practice model, review all documentation, policies and procedures,

etc and align all aspects of the organization.

June 2011 present Consultancy to a three year research project in Japan, funded by the

Ministry of Health to develop Therapeutic Residential and Foster Care. This has included a

period of time in Japan giving presentations, discussions with individuals and groups and visit ing

services.

March 2011 September 2011 Program development for the Lighthouse Foundation

(Australia), in preparation for transferring their Model of Care to other organizations.

July 2010 February 2011 - Co-authored a book with the Lighthouse Foundation on therapeutic

work with homeless children.

Nov 2009 Jan 2010 - Carried out a feasibility study for a UK foster care organization to evaluate

the benefits of developing their program.

Aug 2008 Oct 2009 - Project Consultancy to conceptualize and design a treatment program for

traumatized children in a UK residential program.

SACCS (www.saccs.co.uk) Jan 2002 Aug 2008

SACCS is a UK national organization providing residential care and treatment, training and

consultancy, for children and young people traumatized by abuse and neglect. These children have

severe difficulties in their development and often have serious behavior problems.

Position: Director of Strategic Development Sep 2006 Aug 2008

As part of the strategic board, with two other Directors and the CEO, I was responsible for running

the organisation, which employs over 200 staff.

Achievements in this post:

My key responsibility was the development of new services. The first, in 2006, was to set up the

Mary Walsh institute, providing university accredited training programs to master s level, bespoke

training and consultancy services. The second, in 2007, was to establish a new national foster care

program.

In this role i also worked with two universities to carry out independent research into the long term

outcomes for children placed at SACCS.

Position: Director of Practice (SACCS Ltd Board) Jan 2002 Sep 2006

Achievements in this post:

Responsible as a Director, for the successful operation of 13 children s homes.

Led the development of the SACCS Recovery Program an integrated treatment program for

traumatized children, based on the achievement of 24 outcomes.

Took a lead role in the development of a new regional residential treatment program, opening 4

children s homes.

Led the development of an assessment and planning format, so that the recovery of children,

could be assessed, planned and measured over time.

Led the development of an in-house training program for 150 staff, enabling staff to achieve

qualifications from NVQ3, Foundation Degree, BA and MA Degrees, accredited by North East

Wales Institute and Liverpool Hope University.

Took a lead role in the development of a new foster care service.

Series Editor of five books on therapy, life story work, therapeutic parenting, foster care and

assessment - published by Jessica Kingsley (2004 2008, www.jkp.com )

Developed and managed the SACCS inspection and auditing system.

Young Options (www.youngoptions.co.uk) Jun 2000 Jan 2002

Young Options is a UK national organization providing residential care and education programs, for

children who have emotional and behavior difficulties, autism and Asperger s syndrome.

Position: Regional Director Options for Care / Head of Therapy

Responsible for the development of new Specialist Residential Programs for vulnerable children and

young people - initial management of new projects, leading to consolidation and integration of

programs.

Achievements in this post:

Developed and established a new specialist residential program connected to a school for

Autistic and Asperger s Syndrome children.

Project led the development of a new residential school for children with emotional and

behavioral Difficulties, helping establish 2 new homes and school.

Developed and implemented staff support systems, including supervision and training for over

60 staff.

The Cotswold Community Nov 1985 - May 2000

The Cotswold Community is a residential therapeutic community and school providing long-term

care; education and treatment for emotionally disturbed, deprived and abused boys. It was a

renowned national resource set up by the Home Office to provide a model of excellence.

Position: Assistant Principal, Staff Training and Development 1994 - May 2000

Achievements in this post:

As part of the Senior Management Team led the Cotswold Community through six years of high

placement occupancy, very low staff turnover, financial efficiency and positive outcomes for

children and young people.

Developed the in-house training program, gaining accreditation up to master s level.

Re-organized staff selection and development - within two years, staff turnover improved by

60% and was maintained for the next four years.
