CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Clinical Supervisor, Tennessee State University, 2005-present
Provide individual and group supervision to doctoral and Master s students in
counseling psychology.
Intern, Counseling Center, Michigan State University, 2003-2004
Individual therapy (15-20 sessions/week), psychological diagnosis, I help
clients to deal with many different issues of depression, anxiety, eating
disorders, adjustment, relationships, and personality disorders.
Group therapy (one session/week), my co-leader and I happily helped clients
on issues in depression (including crisis intervention when necessary), social
anxiety, self-esteem, and relationship.
Career Counseling: facilitating clients to make decisions on career or major in
individual and/or group setting.
Multicultural counseling to clients from Hispanic, African American, Native
American, Asian American cultures, and many international students, as well
as clients with homosexual orientations.
Supervising practicum counselors: supervising practicum counselors at
Michigan State University. Their feedback told me that I have enhanced their
conceptualization skills, intervention capacities, and multicultural sensitivity.
Their positive feedback made me enjoy even more my supervision of these
practicum counselors.
Outreach project and workshops: conducted an outreach project toward
international students to help them adjust to their new cultural environment in
Ruth Chu-lien Chao 14
USA. I am also involved in several workshops with graduate and
undergraduate students to help them manage their stress to increase
productivity.
Research: In addition to continuing my previous research projects, I have been
leading a new research team to evaluate client satisfaction. We have looked at
our 5-year data and have had preliminary results. Our proposal has been
accepted to be included in the APA 2004 Convention. The reviewers gave us
strong positive feedback and encouraged us to publish our results.
Teaching: I served as co-instructor in a graduate class on professional ethics
as part of MSU counseling programs. I enjoy integrating class lectures with
discussions to holistically enhance the students' ethical knowledge, awareness,
and their applications to concrete counseling cases.
