RESEARCH
Implemented a multi-granularity search system to find information at the right focus levels.
PROJECTS
Designed a novel hierarchical scoring function and developed an optimal algorithm for
generating a non-overlapping result set.
Conducted large scale crowd-sourced relevance assessment.
Aim to utilize social network of users to find experts and make recommendations.
User Review Structure Analysis(URSA), 2007 - 2010
Used Natural Language Processing tools and Machine Learning algorithms to classify free
form text in restaurant reviews at the sentence level with category and sentiment information.
Used the structure augmented review text for developing a text-based recommendation system.
Studied several approaches for making accurate personalized recommendations.
Compared the performance of the text-based recommendation system to that of the star rating-
based system, found that the rich text is better at making accurate predictions.
Implemented fine-grained sentiment predictions towards individual restaurant features.
Find information on the URSA project at http://www.research.rutgers.edu/~gganu/
Inference on Large Graphs, Technicolor (Palo Alto, CA), Summer 2010
Worked on automatically detecting topical information on large text corpora in the restaurants
and hotels domains.
Designed a novel semantic propagation algorithm that learns topics from a small set of seed
words and gradually grows the graph guided by contextual descriptors.
Friends are Experts : Collaborative Query Refinement, 2008
The FAE system provided a co-operative setting amongst friends to iteratively refine a query,
while using the expertise of one s friends on a particular topic.
Observed that the average query result relevance for response queries was significantly higher
than the responses for original base queries.
Developed application on Facebook platform. Used PhP, JavaScript, Ajax, MySQL
Invited talk at Google, New York, April 2009 - Beyond the Stars: Improving Rating Predictions
