Senior Software Engineer

Converted 12 report programs in the C language written for the OS/2 environment to work in the Windows environment.Rewrote in Visual Basic a C program for check processing.Maintained and made major modifications to a check float management system. This system utilized an Access database with a Visual Basic program overlaying it.

Responsible for the linguistic development of Oracle ConText, a text management system employing a sophisticated Natural Language Processing (NLP) engine.Created rules/algorithms for automatic document classification for Oracle/CNN CustomNews. CustomNews is a news document classification system based on the ConText technology.Designed ConText’s knowledge representation system. This system currently contains approximately 800,000 terms/phrases and a conceptual ontology of more than 3000 categories. Designed and developed the speed-read function for ConText in C/UNIX. Speed-read reduces text as much as 60% by deleting all but the kernel of each sentence.Defined the linguistic requirements for the French, Spanish, and German language implementations of ConText.Designed and prototyped a proper noun detector for English text with no upper/lower case distinctionsDesigned and programmed a part of speech tagger for French.Designed and programmed a system to deal with German separable verb prefixes in free text.Created the windowing environment for PowerEdit as part of the team that converted PowerEdit from DOS to Windows.Supervised the ConText lexicography team.

Led the linguistic development of PowerEdit, a grammar and style correcting software product. Programmed portions of PowerEdit’s full parser for English (Microsoft C). Responsible for quality assurance and documentation. PowerEdit received PC Magazine's Editors' Choice Award in 1991.Designed and programmed a text speed read program (Microsoft C) based on the company's full language parser for English. This program forms the foundation for a family of advanced technical products that automatically summarize text, index text, outline text, and understand the English language.

Developed programmatic methods of optimizing a computerized English dictionary by creating a morpheme based word generator. This work was successfully completed on time and later incorporated into a Texas Instruments product.
