Office
More than 20 years working in a variety of office environments including manufacturing, construction, fundraising, and social service, approximately 10 years as secretary, and 6 in office management.
All positions have involved multi-tasking, telephone skills, writing, editing, use of common office machines, interaction with public and teamwork.
Developed skill at entering and adapting to unknown office environments working for temporary agency in Washington State.
Learned to work with high-powered attorneys during eighteen months of fundraising with The Lawyer’s Campaign for Equal Justice. Provided staff support to committees of lawyers. Coordinated publicity mailing, received and deposited donations–cash, checks, automatic withdrawals, and bank cards–involving thousands of transactions.
Office work included payables and receivables, bill collection, data entry, filing, telephones, working with accountants, bulk mailing–including creating mailing lists, sales, and production of promotional materials (brochures and advertising).
Public Speaking
Have spoken in front of various government entities including Portland City Council, Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, and the Public Utility Commission. Presented service information to a variety of organizations and, recently, three presentations statewide with the Fair Housing Council of Oregon.
Instruction
Taught tenant curriculum (Ready to Rent) over 6 year period to hard-to-house individuals.
Counseling and Advocacy
Seven years working with homeless families to help them find housing. Applied interview skills, tact, motivational skills, and empathy. Assisted 80 to 100 families annually. Advocated for families with private landlords, the Housing Authority of Portland, and before family court as interested party.
Writing, Editing, Proofreading
Extensive business writing experience: Letters, case notes and case studies, advocacy, speeches, presentation materials, grant reports. Consistently applied proofreading and editing skills in all employment experiences.
Journalism experience as reporter and editor of award-winning college newspaper and as contributing writer for monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual publications.
As editor of the have edited two full-length novels, a family history, a poetry anthology, and two chapbooks. At Marylhurst Writing Center was writing coach and editor for student writing projects varying from essays to theses.
Copy-edited numerous publications including several issues of The Green Voice newspaper.
