UNITED NATIONS, U.N. AFFILIATED, AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATIONS (8 YEARS BET. 1986-1995)

Major assignments included the following:

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Tokyo, Japan.

In collaboration with the Institute for Development Anthropology, Binghamton, NY, managed field studies to determine the socio-economic feasibility of a JICA funded flood irrigation project in an arid region of Pakistan.

German International Technical Assistance Program (GTZ), Eschborn, Germany. As GTZ/BRSP Deputy General Manager, Field Operations, designed and managed a self-help based rural/village development project in Baluchistan, Pakistan.

International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) Aleppo, Syria. As Agricultural Economist, conducted studies and authored publications on socio-economic conditions and farming systems in high elevation rain-fed areas of Southwest Asia.

United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Geneva, Switzerland. As Socio-economist, studied and determined the feasibility of various United Nations funded Afghan refugees welfare and rehabilitation programs in Pakistan and Iran.

International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu, Nepal & East West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. As a Socio-economic Research Fellow, studied the relationships between socio-economic institutions of farmers/pastoralists and the productivity of renewable natural resources, in the Karakoram-Hindukush-Himalayan mountain ranges along the border region where Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, China, and India meet.

3. THE UNITED STATES AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, WASHINGTON, D.C. (7 YEARS BET. 1982-1993)

Major assignments included the following:

Agricultural Economist and Rural Development Specialist, USAID Pakistan. Identified, designed, and managed various agricultural, irrigation, rural, and natural resources development projects. Most of the projects aimed at improving the living conditions of communities living in the mountainous, nomadic, pastoral and generally marginalized areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Economist, social scientist, Community Development Specialist. Designed and managed various socio-economic studies for the USAID funded area development projects in Baluchistan and Northwest Frontier provinces of Pakistan. Managed programs which were aimed at eradicating opium poppy cultivation and at developing alternative means for socio-economic development in the tribal and border regions.

Agricultural Economist, USAID Afghanistan. Carried out studies, collected and analyzed data, and compiled reports regarding the production, processing, and trafficking of opium in Southwestern Afghanistan. Also performed economic, social, and environmental feasibility studies for small scale irrigation and agricultural development projects.

rural development specialist. Carried out socio-economic feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for range and livestock development projects in Yemen / Somalia.
