It was a joint mission of WHOI with funding from the U.S. Office of Naval Technology that had first discovered the wreck of Titanic inside the Atlantic Ocean on Sep 1, 1985.

About ALP: It is a real-world Management Consulting exercise offered as part of Hult MBA experience that lets students flex their management muscle by providing blue-chip corporations with practical solutions to existing problems.

The Challenge: WHOI was vulnerable to budget reductions because its prime Federal sponsors' relatively modest cuts had significant impacts on its financial strength. It is widely known that Federal funding for US R&D is under severe pressure, so it is imperative that WHOI plans would suffer accordingly. Diversification of revenue sources was

an obvious option, with the goal of reducing reliance on the Federal Government. The challenge at the Hult ALP was to develop a growth and innovation plan for diversifying WHOI's revenue stream. With a 1 to 3 years time horizon and recognizing that funds within WHOI for traditional business development activities were limited, the plan was supposed to be aimed at enhancing WHOI's unique and highly successful environment for innovation and creativity.

The Consulting Strategy: Developed the intended business plan for WHOI starting from defining the innovation intent of the client and their opportunity insights right up to identifying their possible fields of play in order to arrive at the business concepts and finally a winning business case. This step-by-step strategic approach was well noted and appreciated by the client's management team.
