ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Georges Community College Partnership for Research and Education
in Materials (6/2006) see http://www.coas.howard.edu/PREM for details
Member Department of Chemistry Executive Committee (2005 - )
Responsibilities include supervision of the service courses
(General Chemistry Lecture and Lab, Chemistry for the Health
Sciences Lecture and Lab, Organic Chemistry Lecture and Lab)
Associate Chair, Department of Chemistry, Howard University
(2005 - 2006) and
chair of the department Appointments, Promotions and Tenure
Committee.
Co-Director, ESMD Summer Research Program at Goddard Space
Flight Center(2006)
Academic Dean (Summer 2005)NASA Faculty Summer Research
Opportunity (NSFRO)
Co Director (1995 - 2004)NASA Faculty Fellowship Program (NFFP)
at Goddard Space Flight Center – The NFFP brought ~ 30 faculty to NASA/GSFC (including GISS in
NYC) each summer for ten weeks of research. The follow on NSFRO
was a smaller program this year. Goddard has recently been
awarded ~$225,000 for a faculty summer research program which I
designed and wrote the winning application. I am responsible
for administration of the program including recruitment (in
collaboration with the American Society of Engineering
Education), selection (with the GSFC University Affairs Office),
operation of the program during the summer, and evaluation (with
the University Space Research Association). This responsibility
has linked me to hundreds of Fellows from universities across
the nation, as well as the community of Co-Directors at other
NASA Centers, NASA center UAO officers, many scientists and
engineers at NASA, and ASEE and USRA staff.
Director (1991 - 95), Associate Director (1995 -) DC Space Grant
Consortium– Space Grants are a congressional established national network of
colleges and universities which supports NASA's aeronautics and
space programs through science, and engineering education,
research, and outreach. I was the founding Director of the DC
Space Grant Consortium, and wrote the winning proposal. I now
serve as Associate Director and the Consortium point of contact
at Howard University. Through the DC Space Grant I have (had)
contact with many university colleagues across the nation, and
many NASA scientists, engineers and administrators. The DC SGC
at Howard provides scholarships and fellowships, support of
teaching and small research support grants, obtains and
refurbishes surplus computer equipment and provides software
licenses for teaching and research.
Chair (2002-4), College Technology Committee –
Under my leadership the Committee has drafted a Technology Plan
for the College of Arts and Sciences. It is now under
consideration by the faculty. A copy is available on request.
Chair (2002-4), Department Safety Committee
– I drafted a new Safety Handbook for the Department which was
approved by the faculty. I then took the lead in instituting
the plan across the department. A copy is available on request.
Department Strategic Plan (2001) – In 2001 I drafted a Strategic Plan for the Department of
Chemistry which was adopted and has guided the program since.
One outcome of this planning exercise has been our selection as
a partner department in the Carnegie Initiative on the
Doctorate. A copy is available on request.
Chair (1989 – 93), University Joint Research Advisory Committee
– This committee is responsible for awarding and administering
the start-up and internal research grants at Howard.
Approximately 1.8 M$ was awarded by the committee each year. In
my time as Chair, we emphasized support of new faculty, as well
as establishing technical shops and shared facilities.
Grants and contracts: ~ $5.1 Million in research grants spanning chemical dynamics,
photochemistry, atmospheric science, materials science and
biology. ~ $3.1 Million in education grants. Also I
have been a member of two large (> $1 Million/year) research
centers at Howard. The first was materials science oriented (MSRCE),
and the second atmospheric science oriented. I wrote the
winning proposal for the atmospheric science center (CSTEA).
