SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS
Equity Alliance @ ASU
The equity assistance center at ASU (http://www.equityallianceatasu.org) is
responsible for assistance activities for California, Arizona and Nevada. Gibson serves as
the Evaluation Lead of the Alliance and directs data collection, analysis and
representation, making meaning from complex dynamical data, partnerships and
sustainability activities. Impacts include reaching over 25,000 people each year with a
tiered system of technical assistance, professional learning, provision of research-based
publications and information, formation of professional networks, and continuous
improvement of complex systems of education.
Research topics:
Mapping community influences on educational systems Impact of data
visualization and representation on school leadership and policy decisions as
well as technical assistance project leadership decisions Complex system
modeling of school and district organizational dynamics
simSchool
The simSchool project (http://www.simschool.org) is an online simulation of a
classroom, designed to give teachers practice in key learning concepts and theories such
as the Zone of Proximal Development, Activity Theory, Differentiated Instruction,
Interpersonal Psychology, Learning characteristics, and Special Education. A research
collaboration with Rhonda Christensen and Gerald Knezek of the University of North
Texas funded by the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Post-
Secondary Education (FIPSE) has established its impacts on teacher preparation, which
include: significant increases in self-efficacy in differentiating instruction, significant
increases in beliefs in technology as a tool of teaching, and learning about teaching that
DAVID GIBSON 2 OF 15
abqdp3@r.postjobfree.com
is on a par with face-to-face training. These impacts led to Texas NCATE approving
simSchool as a replacement for 10 hours of student teaching experience.
Research topics:
Cognitive and professional development of teachers Impacts of simulation on
users Modeling emotion, cognition, instruction, and learning in digital
environments Network-based assessment
The Global Challenge Award
The GCA (http://www.globalchallengeaward.org) established with funding in 2006
from the National Science Foundation ITEST Program, and awarded a 2010 MacArthur
Foundation-HASTAC Competition award, provides a K16 partnership framework that
supports young women and minority high school students for three years and hundreds
of hours outside of school to develop the knowledge, skills and personal vision to see
science, technology, engineering and mathematical (STEM) studies as feasible and
desirable choices for college majors. Impacts include engagement of over 230 US
students and 230 students from around the world each year, who are formed into
mentored international teams that learn together for up to 280 hours and compete for
significant privately raised scholarships while working with IT tools of science -
computational science and communication tools - on real-life problems. Student
knowledge and skills are enhanced through highly engaging, intensive, long-term
contact with research scientists, engineers, mathematicians and project leaders who help
the students use innovative technologies in a new synthesis of online support materials
and structures for STEM learning.
Research topics:
Gender preferences in STEM education Game and simulation-based
educational design frameworks and learning tools Informal science and digital
media learning.
