Newsroom experience:

2010-present: Managing Editor/Politics, National Journal: Managing political coverage

across three platforms -- National Journal s daily website; a five-day a week print

publication and National Journal magazine -- as well as social media. Coordinating coverage

with semi-autonomous partners, Hotline and the Cook Political Report.

1998-2010: Washington correspondent, USA TODAY: Coverage of Congress and national

politics and other major stories, including the historic election of President Barack Obama;

the 2000 presidential recount; Supreme Court confirmations and unrest in the Middle East.

Spearheaded creation of multimedia newsroom at 2000 conventions.

1997-98: White House correspondent, New York Daily News: Covered White House for one

of the most competitive news markets in the world during the height of the Monica Lewinsky

scandal; traveled to Latin America and China with the president.

1995-97: Washington bureau chief, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette: Ran a three-person bureau

that competed with much larger organizations in covering the Clinton administration;

managed coverage of a political convention and presidential inaugural; trained younger

reporters to cover these events and to assume control of the bureau.

1991-95: Washington bureau chief, the Houston Post: Regular duties included management

of five-person bureau, budget preparation and equipment maintenance as well as daily news

coverage. Unexpected duties: Crisis-managing a bureau through the shutdown of the

newspaper, and helping to place all of my colleagues in new jobs within five months.

1984-91: Washington correspondent, the Houston Post: Provided aggressive coverage of a

high-profile congressional delegation; wrote the first major piece on Rep. Charlie Wilson s

activities in Afghanistan later the subject of a major motion picture covered the fall of the

Berlin Wall.

1981-84: Washington correspondent, the Pittsburgh Press: Covered regional news from the

White House, Congress and Supreme Court; developed a sub-beat on global trade policy in

covering the struggles of the local steel industry with overseas competitors.

1977-81: general assignment reporter, the Pittsburgh Press: Covered stories ranging from the

Great Tomato Festival to the near-meltdown at Three Mile Island; shared a string for Time

Magazine. Mastered new technology for filing stories, which resulted in an assignment to

help the politics reporter cover the 1980 conventions.

Classroom experience:

Fall semester, 2010: Adjunct professor of journalism, American University: Introduction to

Mass Communications writing/reporting. Adapting a writing and information-gathering class

to prepare (and maintain the interest of) students aspiring to careers in both journalism and

public affairs.

Spring semester, 2009: Ferris professor of journalism, Princeton University: Developed class

on multimedia journalism that encouraged students to think creatively about the pressures the

marketplace is putting on the craft and how they might use technology to guarantee it a

future. The course featured a wide range of speakers, including newspaper editors, successful

bloggers, video journalists and an expert on copyright and Creative Commons.

Fall semester, 2009: Adjunct professor of journalism, American University. Intro

writing/reporting class for Mass Communications
