tools for people with serious mental illness to take more charge of their own process of life improvement.

Co-facilitated

the executive staff visioning retreat focused on moving all programs more in the direction of a “Recovery” model.

Collaborated

with Patricia Ridgway (University of Kansas, “Pathways to Recovery”)

WORK ALIVE!, Chicago, IL

1992-2003

President

For the IS division of a major airline, provided change management support to the team charged with upgrading

and centralizing the management of all computer servers. Required major culture

change in an organization previously characterized by almost total local control over IS practices. Project was designed and implemented with so many collaborative feedback loops with the field that resistance

quickly melted and field personnel reported never feeling more respected by headquarters decision-makers.

Coached and consulted to a newly merged group of 9 internal HR consultants in a major utility company. Through

individual coaching and numerous half-day training sessions, helped them build their team by integrating a common model for

the consulting process.

Helped a Big 5 management consulting firm develop consulting skills courses for their change management consultants,

to develop “reflective practitioners” who combine technical expertise with enhanced communication and client relationship

skills.

As “Learning Coach” in a regular two-week consulting skills immersion course, taught communication,

teaming and leadership skills to new management consultants at a Big 5 consulting firm.

Instructed change management and several other modules, coached individuals, and generally intervened to support a

healthy learning environment. Coached content faculty (line consultants recruited

to teach for the two weeks) on how to be less directive and better coaches.

Provided over 100 days of training in “Men & Women as Colleagues” workshop, delivered over the

entire 6-year course of the unprecedented Women’s Initiative at Deloitte & Touche.

This initiative dramatically changed the firm’s culture (Harvard Business Review, November/December 2000).

For ten weeks, consulted to downsized workers in a career transition center.

Helped clients cope with the impact of job loss, identify and effectively express their work skills and strengths,

develop resumes and learn all elements of the job search process.

Developed a particular focus on “work-life integration” – helping individuals to make their

greatest creative contributions by aligning their work more fully with their own uniqueness, and helping teams and organizations

support this way of working in their members.

CINCINNATI GAS & ELECTRIC, Cincinnati, OH

1990-1991

Organization Development Consultant

Helped establish a new 3-person OD group, targeted at changing

the organization’s culture towards more accountability, teaming, and entrepreneurship.

Over six months, helped the Information Services Department

develop a plan for its own reorganization (including a 20% downsizing) – and then sell it to their VP. In the process, they changed from an organization known for its internal competition and turfism to a team

that took great pride in their cohesiveness and group process skills.

Helped the Training Department create a bold new vision for

their role in the company. Coached and consulted to a 3-person leadership team that became part of a think tank with Peter

Senge at MIT, then developed and implemented a well-received plan to help the company become a “learning organization”.

Consulted to the second highest officer in the company around his sometimes confusing and intimidating leadership

style. Received his gratitude for “straight talk” and coached him

for several months as he successfully improved his style.

AT&T, Chicago, IL

1985-1990

Organization Development Consultant

Sold and implemented a climate feedback process throughout the

200 person central region computer Sales Division, beginning with the Vice President.

Facilitated a dramatic opening in organizational style, which began with the VP and then cascaded down.

Was requested by the central region VP of Human Resources to

coach him around his leadership style. Helped him shift from a mostly intimidating

style to a much more open and collegial approach. He later rose several levels

higher in the company.

WESTSIDE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION HOSPITAL, Chicago, IL 1981-1985 Psychologist,
