TESTIMONY
Prior to October 1982, I would have assumed I was a Christian and yet had no concerns about the things of God or
eternity. I had been baptized as an infant in a main line denominational church, attended church with family and had a
stable, moral and loving upbringing along with my younger brother and sister. I was con rmed in the church and even
served as an acolyte. I knew I was not a Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or Jew. Since I went to church and believed in
God, I wrongly gured that I must be a Christian. Added to my spiritual blindness, I had a skewed view of sin and hell
that prevented me from understanding my need of the Savior.
From the early 1970 s, my mom had been having bouts with cancer. By the time I was in middle school, our family
had ceased going to church; something about the church not being there for my parents through my mother s battle
with cancer. The summer before my junior year at FSU, she was on her death bed at home being cared for by
Hospice. Questions about heaven, hell, God and life ooded my mind. What would happen to her after she died?
Would she go to heaven or hell? How can I be sure to stay out of one and get into the other? What would happen to
me at death? The questions burned with intensity. I sought answers through philosophy classes but came up with
nothing. Then, on my rst day of classes, she died. After returning to FSU from the funeral, a friend invited me to a
meeting of students with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship on campus. After the meeting, a student shared the gospel
with me. I had heard it before, but this time the gospel began to resonate and take root. That same student invited me
to attend a weekly Bible study group with him. Through the Bible study and by meeting with this student on a regular
basis, God began to show me my own sin and need of the Savior. I found the answers in Jesus Christ through His
atoning death on the cross for my sins. All the things I had falsely used to de ne myself as a Christian no longer held
any relevance. God had saved me, not because of anything by which I merited His favor, but by grace alone through
faith alone. In October 1982, I rested in Christ alone for what He had already done for me on the cross.
God had made me a new creature in Christ Jesus and the transformation He was accomplishing in me quickly
became noticeable. Before my salvation, I had declared business as my college major. My motive - take the world for
every penny I could get. After my salvation, I wanted only to invest in the lives of others with the gospel. The only
college major FSU offered that came close to supporting that was Social Work, the degree I completed in 1984.
During those last two years of college, God grew and shaped me through the ministry of Inter-Varsity and
Westminster Presbyterian Church (PCA). This was my rst introduction to a PCA church. I also became friends with
the campus Navigator staff and was involved in their alumni ministry after graduation. As God continued to shape and
mold me, I sensed an inward call to ministry which was outwardly con rmed. That con rmation led to starting
seminary in January of 1987.
While in seminary, I met and married Karan Sorlie. God graced us with three wonderful children while we lived in
Columbia, SC.
Involvement in campus ministry, seminary, lay ministry and church staff and have been the path He has taken me on
thus far. It has been lled with rejoicing and sadness. God s goodness and grace have been woven throughout all of
it. As God continues to lead, I will serve Him wherever He places me.
