Nokia 2008 – now

Software Development Manager

Build and lead teams to deliver mobile and server-based applications for millions of Nokia Messaging customers.Recruited team and led design of Social Networking mobile application, which was subsequently shipped on several hundred million devices.Delivered first release of Visual Voicemail for Windows Mobile, Android and J2ME. Shipped mobile email client applications and components used on millions of devices.Led initiative to build messaging framework, reusable across mobile client applications and platforms – used by other Nokia development teams to deliver better quality mobile applications in less time, at lower cost. Replaced fragmented Oracle-based reporting infrastructure with a Consolidated Data Warehouse; able to provide detailed information and analytics to Nokia executive management, marketing, product and engineering teams. Savings of over $25M were achieved by implementing a distributed model based on MySQL and Java. Dramatic improvements in scalability and robustness allow the new system to scale to support hundreds of millions of phones.Architected and managed project to replace all messaging gateway online Oracle databases with MySQL. With minimal application changes, performance is now comparable to Oracle, at one tenth the price.Simplified deployment of mobile configuration data to Nokia phones worldwide. Previously, deployment was complex (hundreds of phone models, customer plans, portals, i.e. Gmail, MSN, legal requirements, etc.) that product roll-out delays of several weeks were common. Now configurations can be updated globally in a few hours.
