EXPERIENCES
1. Designing and Prototyping a search and classification system at www.cancer,gov, from
March 2001
to Present (as an architect)
I have been designing a search and classification system at www.cancer.gov and
prototyping it with a couple of commercial search engines including Verity K2 and Inktomi
CCE. I surveyed and tested a lot of commercial systems and investigated how they can serve
at a national cancer institute-wide enterprise system. It covers the meta-searching,
spidering and ODBC access to relational database systems. It also covers wide range of
document types including HTML, PDF and XML. The skills I got are Verity K2, Inktomi CCE,
Altavista 3.0, Java, JSP, C++, Visual basic, ASP, .NET, XML, XSL, XML Schema, ODBC, SQL
Server.
2. XPERT (XPath based query language Evaluation and Retrieval Tool), a Java-based XML
Document management system, from December 1999 to present (on my own).
I have developed XPERT, a Java-based XML document management system. I create indices
for XML data and putting these into file systems with compressed form, or commercial
relational databases using JDBC or JDBC-ODBC bridge. At the same time, I implemented XPath
on top of that. The version 0.7 was released in July 2001. Especially it is recently being
installed as an XML search engine in NASA ADC Center (http://adc.gsfc.nasa.gov) and
introduced broadly (For instance see: http://xml.coverpages.org/ni2001-02-15-b.html). The
skills I got are: Java, XML Parser, XML DOM, SAX, JDBC and JDBC-ODBC bridge, MS SQL Server
7.0 and Java Instant DB, XPath, JBuilder 3.0, data compression technique. See more at:
http://www.futurexpert.com
3. Indexing and Retrieval for XML (XRS),
from
March 1998 to November 1999 (on my own)
In this project, I developed an XML retrieval system named XRS. It is recognized as one
of successful XML search engines and recognized worldwide ( See http://www.oasis-
open.org/cover/xmlQuery.html#software and http://www.searchtools.com/related/xml-
resources.html). The technologies of XRS were already published in international journals
and conferences (including XML developers conference 9) Especially XRS was included in
the CD of the book "The XML handbook, Third edition" by Charles Goldfarb and Paul Prescord
(Prentice Hall). The skills that I used are: Servlet, Java applet, Java Native Interface,
Socket comm. and multi-thread programming With Java, Java Native Interface, C/C++, XML
Parser, DOM (Document Object Model), XML/XSL style sheet, Apache server, Apache JServlet,
Allare Jrun, See more at http://dlb2.nlm.nih.gov/~dwshin/xrs.html
4. Search engine in Biomedical digital library from March 1999 to February 2001 (as a
researcher)
In the National Library of Medicine, I have developed an advanced search engine that
utilizes the metadata. The metadata was originally created in HTML, but was translated
into RDF (Resource Description Framework)/XML. My role is to define meta data in the
RDF/XML and develop an intelligent search engine using Verity search engine. The skills I
got are Verity information retrieval system, Apache Web server, CGI, HTML, RDF/XML, Perl.
5. A research on a Digital Library, sponsored by the ministry of Information and
Communication from
May 1995
to April 1996 and by KOSEF from March 1996 to February 1999
(as a researcher)
This project aimed at discovering the architecture in the distributed environment and
each component essential in the architecture. The skills I got C/C++, CORBA, SGML, HTML,
HTTP.
6. The design and implementation of a distributed information retrieval system on
Internet environment, sponsored by KOSEF, from March 1996 to February 1998 (as a principle
investigator)
This project has discovered an effective architecture of an information retrieval system
distributed over the internet and investigating a reasonable collection fusion strategy
that gathers the results coming out from a variety of retrieval engines. The skills I got
are C/C++, Socket programming, Robot technology
7. The development of an information retrieval system on an object-oriented
DBMS BADA
-
III, sponsored by ETRI from
March 1995
to November 1997 (as a principle investigator).
This projects concerned about the development of an information retrieval system that is
tightly coupled in an object oriented DBMS BADA-III. The skills I got are Object
Relational DBMS and C/C++
8. The development of a retrieval algorithm and indexing methods for structured
documents, sponsored by SERI from February 1997 to November 1997 (as a researcher)
This project aimed at developing an effective architecture for performing structured
documents tagged in SGML, especially discovering indexing/retrieval algorithms for
handling a wide range of structured query languages. The skills I got are C/C++ and SGML.
9. The development of EZ-Search engine, sponsored by H.C.I. Inc. from September 1997 to
December 1997 (commercialized) (as a principle investigator)
This project aimed at developing and commercializing an information retrieval system
that handles SGML documents effectively. It provided thesaurus browsing and communicates
via z39.50 protocols. I used commercial NLP system to enhance the retrieval effectiveness.
I got extensive knowledge about SGML and z39.50 protocol. The skills that I got are C/C++,
SGML and Z39.50 protocol, NLP techniques.
10. The development of an intelligent menu retrieval, sponsored by ETRI
March 1994 to
February 1995
(as a principle investigator)
This project aimed at applying a traditional IR technique to the efficient menu
retrieval. The menu hierarchies in an Internet portal service are often too complicated,
so that novice users are not ble to reach the menus they want. In this project, we indexed
the menus with the additional representation of hierarchical relationship and produced
high precisions. The technologies we use here are Prolog, C and knowledge representation
techniques and AI techniques.
11. The development of an Intelligent Information Retrieval Systems using Domain
Knowledge, sponsored by KAIST/CAIR
March 1992 to February 1993 (as a principle
investigator)
This project aimed at exploring the role of domain knowledge in retrieval effectiveness.
We represent the domain knowledge as Horn clauses and devised a retrieval algorithm using
the domain knowledge effectively. The technologies we use are: Prolog and knowledge
representation techniques and AI techniques.
12. Prolog type system sponsored by Fujitsu Laboratory Japan June 1990 October 1991 (as
a researcher)
This project aimed at the automatic type inference of Prolog and optimized the compiler.
The skills I got are Prolog and compiler optimization skill
13. The development of Next Generation Computer System sponsored by KAIST
March 1986 to
May 1990. 1990
(as a researcher)
This project aimed at the development of the parallel Prolog machine similarly as the
Fifth generation project carried out in Japan. The skills I got are Prolog compiler
generation, parallel compiler, C
