ABOUT THE EIU JOURNALISM DEPARTMENT: The EIU Journalism Department is one of
approximately 110 programs nationwide accredited by the Accrediting Council for Education in
Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) and must adhere to strict standards in areas such
as curriculum, instruction, class size, diversity and inclusiveness, and student services. ACEJMC-
accredited programs must undergo extensive evaluations every six years. The EIU Journalism
Department was first accredited in 1982 and was re-accredited in 1988, 1994, 2000, 2006 and
2012. The department has 13 fulltime faculty members and approximately 150 majors.

Distinguished Service Award, Illinois High School Association, June 2012. Award given for
contributions to the creation and success of state-wide high school journalism competitions sponsored
by IHSA annually since 2006.
Hall of Fame inductee, College Media Association, October 2011. CMA Hall of Fame inductees must
have contributed to college journalism education for 20 years or more while being active members of
CMA. The award recognizes longtime members who have contributed to the betterment and value of
student media programs of both the campus and nation. It also pays tribute to members who have
devoted extensive service to CMA by serving in leadership roles and presenting programs and sessions
at conventions
Reid H. Montgomery Distinguished Service Award, College Media Association, October 2010. The
award is presented to an individual or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to collegiate
media or media advising.
Journalism Educator of the Year, Scholastic Journalism Division of the Association for Education in
Journalism and Mass Communication, August 2008. The award recognizes a deserving division member
for his/her outstanding performance in the college/university classroom and in scholastic journalism
workshops and conferences.
