*Please
do NOT make the same mistake I made in my doctoral program. Make sure
your college and every step in your program is fully accredited. If you
don't you could have problems with recognition of your degree later in your
life.
I attended a university (FIT - Fla. Institute of Technology) that was accredited
but the Science Education program I attended was just gaining
accreditation. While my coursework and orals & written exams for my
program in Post Secondary Science Education and Educational Psychology are all
fully accredited and recognized, my dissertation was not. Thus, the final
degree is in question by the Los Angeles Community College District.
At FIT, I asked for release from the Science Education requirements to do a
strictly Microbiology research project at the Centers for Disease Control in
Atlanta, GA for my dissertation. The results of my research resulted in a
publication in the journal Lancet .** My request was approved but I
failed to determine that my advisor and supervising institution in Atlanta was
accredited. This turned-out to be a serious error on my part.
After the publication of my research, FIT did not recognize my
dissertation. Currently all parties are fully accredited and some
institutions recognize my degree (My Research employers, Charles Drew
University, and others) but the Los Angeles Community College District and City
College does NOT. As a consequence I ask that you refer to me as Professor
Hicks or Mr. Hicks.
Make sure your program and institution is fully accredited! Don't make the
mistake I did, it is embarrassing and costly in many ways!
