SIUE Summer Arts Program, Summer 2008

Teaching a variety of students K-6th grade in the areas of Mixed Media, Ceramics, Jewelry, Textiles, and Illustration came with a variety of challenges. The wide range of ability, interest, age, and class size presented new obstacles that I was successfully able to manage each week. Some highlights from the workshops include a fashion show, puppet show, and a “Harry Potter” themed day.

Arts In the Park/ Saturday Studios, Summer 2008

Each week a new artist is explored and the local youth is invited to make a variety of projects free of charge. I instructed such lessons as mono printing, nature rubbings, and chalk drawings.

Junior Achievement, Spring 2008

I successfully completed the Junior Achievement curriculum in two East Elementary classrooms in Alton, IL, as well as various art lessons. During my involvement with East, I worked closely with the parent volunteers to hang and organize the East Elementary School Art Show at the Jacoby Art Center in Alton.

Girl Talk, Girl Power Conference, Spring 2008

This powerful conference of young ladies focused on a theme of connections. I was blessed to take part in this powerful seminar for adolescent girls and to share an art lesson that involved macramé and beading that supported the theme of staying connected to oneself and others.

SIU Carbondale Arts Festival, Spring 2007

Every spring SIUC hosts an Arts Festival that includes hands on art for two days for elementary school students. Each day consists of instruction to over 600 children in three activities. We successfully completed frottage, fish rubbings, and pinch pot activities to each group of students for the two festival days.

CCS Brain Trauma Center, Spring 2007

During my instruction at the CCS Center I worked with young adults ages 11-19 that were recovering from brain trauma injuries. Using adaptive tools and methods was a key to my success as instructor at CCS as well as learning to help the students cope with some of the emotional distress of their situations. The projects completed at the Center included hand building clay projects, quilting, and marbleizing paper.

Boys and Girls Club, Spring 2007

Every Wednesday of the semester I spent the afternoon with underprivileged and at risk youth in an art room at the Carbondale Boys and Girls Club. The curriculum was student based and often led into discussions of family life, problems at school, and how to use art to express emotion. While working at the Club, I also instructed the students in making “talking wands” for a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club. The wands were auctioned off during the Shawnee Talking Wand Project at the Blue Sky Vineyard. The project was a community outreach program to educate the public about invasive species of vines in the Carbondale area. The partnership between the Shawnee Project and Boys and Girls Club students made this outreach program a success.

Saturday Young Artist Workshops, Spring 2007

The theme of “Storytelling With Recyclables” was explored during eight Saturdays. Twenty-three students created a multitude of projects under our supervision. The culminating activity was a show for family and friends of the young artists.

Professional Preparation and Work Experience:

Alton Marina Muralist, Summer 2008

The commission work I have completed at the Alton Marina included two murals in their public bathrooms. These commissions have led to various other offers that allow me to keep producing works as an artist.

Annual High School Exhibition SIUE, Spring 2008

In addition to assisting to hang the show, volunteering during the show to answer questions, replenish the refreshments, and help with the takedown, I was also able to meet many of the local high school art teachers.

Art Education Workshop, Spring 2007

Participating in the Imaginarium Journal Workshop instructed by UIUC art educator, Rebecca Plummer-Rohloff was a way to focus on self-discovery in the realms of education, art, and research.

Alpha Sigma Tau, Sorority

During my time as an active member of AST I was elected into the positions of Pledge Class Fundraiser, and Philanthropy Chair. These positions enhanced my leadership, team building, and fundraising skills.
