Rejoined my partners from Doyle Partners to help
found RED, which is a
wholly-owned MGU for State Auto Insurance Company.
Since inception, RED
has produced $300 mm GWP in program, captive and
reinsurance business on
behalf of State Auto. My responsibilities with this
start-up venture have been
multi-faceted and all encompassing and include:
. Overall management of RED's operations
. Nationwide account production
. General counsel/claim counsel duties
As RED grew and developed my
claim management role greatly expanded to
Include the following:
1) Conducting continuous pre-quote and
follow-up claim reviews to validate and
measure Program claim results
2) Management of a nationwide 14,000-plus
largely Program claim book
3) Development and management of all TPA
relationships. This included initial
TPA approvals, execution of Claim
Service Agreements and oversight of the
TPA data feed process.
4/08-6/09 MCNEIL & COMPANY, INC

Managed McNeil's in-house TPA
which administered the McNeil claim book
nationwide. The McNeil MGA is a
leading provider of insurance
programs for emergency service
organizations and other specialty niche
markets such as medical equipment,
commercial fire suppression,
outdoor and recreation insurance
and wild land fire suppression, The
McNeil TPA handles the claims related to these
programs. This is a
complex and volatile multi-line claim book involving
general liability, auto
liability, property, workers compensation and
products liability. With the
possible exception of certain Tillinghast consulting
assignments, this was
probably my most challenging assignment from a
technical claim
handling perspective.

Partner in consulting firm
specializing in alternative risk solutions. The firm
consulted on everything from
guaranteed cost programs and pure self insurance
to captive formations and the
long term creation of specialty insurance
companies. Doyle Partners
assisted in strategic review, the creation of
alternative risk vehicles,
reinsurance planning/design, paper consultation
and analysis of market support
and a multitude of risk transfer tasks.
For the final two years of the
firm's tenure, we worked with a large MGA/TPA
in this capacity. Personally I
acted as Director of Claims for this MGA/TPA
running all claim operations
while also conducting assignments for other clients.
3/02-7/05 ARCH INSURANCE COMPANY
Senior Vice President
Member of management team of
Arch's Captive Division. Over this 3 year
period I helped develop this
new franchise and personally produced over
$150,000,000. in single
parent and group captive business. In addition, I
managed the TPA's that handled
our claims nationwide.
11/98 - 2/02 Alea Alternative Risk
Senior Vice President
Managed and implemented the U.S.-based activities for this
Alternative Risk Reinsurer. Primarily, I produced
Program deals and developed a claim operation that
handled serious claims and provided claim oversight to
TPAs nationwide. Member of management team directing
claim, compliance, underwriting and finance activities.
4/91 - 11/98 Discover Reinsurance
Senior Vice President-Claim
Counsel
1/97-11/98 Lead producer for Discover's Special Marketing Group which
concentrated on captive business - group, association,
agency and Rent-a-Captives. Produced and managed well
over $100 million book of Program Captive business. In
addition, I continued to manage Discover RE's claim
operations which I had developed in 1991.
4/91-1/97 Developed and implemented Discover's claim process. Hired
and trained claim/legal staff. Structured nationwide
"unbundled" claim operation with Third Party
Administrators and self-administered claim operations.
Handled and managed several thousand potentially
catastrophic claims.
3/88-4/91 Tillinghast, a Towers Perrin Company
Consultant
Consulted on many major projects involving corporations,
insurance companies and public entities. Involved in a
wide variety of claim, legal, risk management and
actuarial issues. Developed an expertise in case-based
claim reserving and claim management.
11/80-3/88 Home Insurance Company
Member of the Home's executive training, Intern Program. Held
legal, claim adjusting, supervisory and claim management
positions in the Home's Philadelphia, New York City and
San Francisco Field Offices. Final position with the
Home involved running its California claim operations.
