Nursing 112-Adult Health Maintenance I (8-3-5). The study, identification and
application of nursing knowledge and skills related to adult health needs.
Emphasis is on patient-centered care utilizing the nursing process with principles
applied in the clinical setting. (Winter Quarter)
Nursing 210-Maternal/Newborn Health Maintenance (8-3-5). A study and
application of principles and concepts of family centered maternal/newborn care
with emphasis on meeting specific needs of select clients during the childbearing
cycle and newborn period. During 2003-2012, 441 Nursing 210 (Maternal-
Newborn Health Maintenance) students implemented 241 service learning
projects in north Louisiana and south Arkansas involving 56,310 individuals.
These projects included breastfeeding, sexually transmitted disease prevention,
contraception, infant car safety, prenatal education, teenage pregnancy, fetal
development, prematurity prevention, infant care, breast cancer awareness and
emergency maternal services. (Fall, Spring, and Summer Quarters)
Previously taught
Nursing 110-Introduction to Application of the Nursing Process (12-0-3). A
course designed to acquaint students with fundamental nursing principles and
techniques utilized to administer safe nursing care in meeting basic human needs
of clients in select age groups. Principles are applied in the clinical setting.
Emphasis is on interpersonal skills, communication, interviewing, and
observation.
Nursing 212-Child Health Maintenance (8-3-5). The study, identification and
application of nursing knowledge and skills related to the health needs of children
and adolescents with emphasis on growth and development, the family,
prevention and intervention in illness using the nursing process.
Nursing 216-Nursing Practicum (24-4-7). A course designed for the integration of
knowledge and skills acquired in previous nursing courses with study and
application of more complex concepts. Emphasis is on use of the nursing process
in caring for clients with multiple threats to basic needs, and in gaining more
expertise in working as a member of the health care team.

Nursing 210 Service-Learning projects
Between the fall quarters of 2003 and Spring 2012, 425 Nursing 210 (Maternal-
Newborn Health Maintenance) students implemented 235 service learning projects in
north Louisiana and south Arkansas involving 56,243 community participants with
1,327 hours reported between fall 2009- 2012. These projects included classes
concerning sexually transmitted disease prevention, contraception, breastfeeding,
infant care and safety, prenatal education, teen pregnancy, fetal development,
prematurity prevention, breast cancer awareness and emergency maternal services.
Service-learning projects such as these may help to decrease the STI rate and teenage
pregnancy rate in this area and improve pregnancy outcomes for others. Agency
partners include the March of Dimes, Volunteers of America, Life Choices, Public and
Private Junior High and High Schools, Public Health Units, Susan G. Komen
Foundation and Fire Departments /EMS.
Zeta Rho Chapter, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Philanthropic Sorority, 1984 to present
Co-Chair for St. Jude Children s Research Hospital Radiothon: over $2,700,000
pledged in 31 years. The annual radiothon involves approximately 125 volunteers and
several LA Tech student and faculty groups. Served as president, treasurer, awards
chair, radiothon chair, pledge orientation leader and philanthropic chair for local Zeta
Rho chapter; North Central District ESA President; and various state committee chairs.
Named Zeta Rho Woman of the Year 1986 and 1997 and the Louisiana ESA Woman
of the year 1997. First member in the state of LA to receive the 6th Pallas Athene
Degree.
March of Dimes Walk America Ambassador Family 2005-2012: Includes planning for
annual Ruston March for Babies, attending civic and fundraising events, TV
appearances, speaking engagements, and serving as Mistress of Ceremonies for the
2007, 2008,2009 and 2010 Ruston March for Babies (formerly, Walk America) over
$370,000 raised. Coordinated Prematurity Prevention Awareness Day events in 2010
