Professional Experience
1986
-1995: ABC News 20/20
* A 1995 story about the means to produce the bomb at the federal
building in Oklahoma City
* A 1995 profile of Motown creator Berry Gordy
* A 1994 analysis of how estrogen-like compounds are adversely
affecting wildlife
and some human beings
* A 1994 investigation of illegal monitoring techniques used by
Campbell's Soup
toward its employees
* A 1993 investigation of patients infected with AIDs by a Florida
dentist
* An interview between President Clinton and Barbara Walters on the
occasion of the 1993 Middle East peace agreement between the PLO
and Israel
* An investigation of how the military had incorrectly identified
deaths of soldiers as suicides. The 1993 report focused on a
growing number of poor investigative techniques used by the
military
* A 1993 profile of Attorney General Janet Reno, the first woman to
hold the Cabinet
* A 1993 investigation of the in-vitro fertilization industry
* An investigation of American soldiers held by the Soviet Union
during World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. The 1992
report focused on how the U.S. government abandoned hundreds of
American POWs to avoid the risk of war with the Soviet Union
* An investigation of the charges against border guards at the
Berlin Wall. The 1992 report focused on court proceedings against
an estimated 300 former guards charged with killing their fellow
East Germans
* An exclusive interview for Barbara Walters with Terry Waite, the
hostage negotiator and then hostage in Lebanon. The 1992 interview
focused on his five-year ordeal as a hostage and his future plans
* An investigation of the transfer of cluster bomb technology from
the United States to Iraq during the Iraq-Iran war. The 1991
report focused on the Chilean arms dealer, Carlos Cardoen, and has
led to further U.S. government investigations of the transfer of
American technology to Iraq
* An investigation of the safety of the Airbus 320 airplane, the
fastest selling airplane in aviation history. The 1990 report
called into question the safety of the computer systems within the
aircraft and the efficacy of use of the European-made airplane
within the United States, where several major airlines had bought
the new craft.
* An investigation of Halcion, which had become the world's
largest-selling drug. The 1989 report cleared a woman of a murder
charge when the judge determined that she had been given the drug
improperly, caused an out-of-court settlement worth an estimated
$21 million from the drug's producer, Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, and
lead to the banning of Halcion in the United Kingdom.
* A two-part investigation of Frank Lorenzo, the chairman of Texas
Air Corporation, and his far-flung empire that included Eastern
Airlines, Continental Airlines and a variety of smaller carriers
that had become the Western world's largest airline. The 1988
report detailed the practices of management personnel in sending
what many regarded as unsafe planes into the air. The report
resulted in an FAA investigation, the eventual prosecution of
senior Eastern management officials for criminal malfeasance and
one of the largest fines in aviation history.
* A two-part investigation of the attack on the U.S. Marines in
Beirut that left 241 soldiers dead. The 1987 report focused on how
the U.S. Administration failed to provide adequate protection for
the servicemen, and how top U.S. intelligence officials failed to
share critical information that could have prevented the attack.
In addition, the report outlined the connections among a variety
of groups in Lebanon and key Middle East governments in planning
and carrying out the attack.
1983
-1986: ABC News, Bureau Chief, Rome, Italy
Major stories and responsibilities included:

freelance personnel that included two camera crews, two
correspondents, three producers, two editors and associated
administrative and news staff. The major renovation of the Rome
bureau facilities, including the installation of live satellite
capabilities. It was the first contract of its kind in the history
of network television in Italy, and a contract that every other
network followed. Negotiation of contracts to extend ABC News
coverage operations in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Hungary, Poland and
Yugoslavia.

India. The first time that all networks and European networks
pooled all material on a trip of Pope John Paul II.

cruise liner that resulted in the death of an American. The

-1983: ABC News, Correspondent, Rome, Italy
* Correspondent, 1983. The plot to kill Pope John Paul II, where a
team of ABC reporters and producers traveled throughout the world
to analyze the charge that the Soviet Union had orchestrated the
assassination attempt in 1981 against the Pope. I was responsible
for the bulk of the reporting in Eastern Europe, which showed that
there was no direct link between the KGB and the attack on the
Pope. Despite the conventional view that the KGB ordered the
attack, it was only recently that the CIA divulged information
that the ABC story was accurate about the role of the KGB.
* Correspondent, 1982. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon, where I
spent nearly three months covering the war. I also worked as a
