But through sleet and snow and summer heat Thomas and / or his wife have maintained a permanent presence starting back in the Carter administration. I contributed an article to the Portsmouth Sunday Herald regarding this fellow's permanent protest.Daniel Webster, Senator, Secretary of State and great orator. Twice he refused to accept the Whig party's nomination for Vice Preident because anything less than #1 was beneath his dignity - and in both instances the Whig candidate won and then died in office (William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor). Lesson? Sometimes being 2nd is the way to get to number 1?

Perhaps only someone from Maine with family in New Brunswick, Canada would stop to contemplate this plaque. The 1842 treaty ended the so called bloodless "Aroostook War" by settling the Maine / New Brunswick border - almost. To this day the sovereignty of Machais Seal Island remains in dispute between the United States and Canada.
