The M.I.T. motto Mens et Manus, or Mind in Hand, reflects the ideal that
education should above all be used for practical applications. Following in that
M.I.T. tradition of using technology, academia and research to solve real-world
challenges, The Case is an annual real estate case competition crafted to provide
the graduate student community an opportunity to compete, showcase their talents
and knowledge and learn from each other through the analysis of an actual,
complex development site. Unlike other competitions, The Case focuses on real
estate financial underwriting at the asset level. The competition mimics the
professional circumstances and assignments that students interested in real estate
finance, acquisitions and development are likely to encounter prior to graduation.
"We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.
Winston Churchill
"We ought to thoughtfully approach the process that designs, constructs this
built environment that we will leave to subsequent generations.
Larry Bacow, Co-Founder MIT/CRE
"If real estate isn t important, I don t know what is. We live in it, we work in it,
we play in it, we re sitting in it right now. It is everywhere.
Dr. David Geltner, Director MIT/CRE
