Work/Internships, Amanda Arnold Elementary School, 2012–

Currently completing 720-hour, two-semester clinical practicum in a K-6 building (with 470+ students) in Manhattan, Kansas. Participate in experiences expected of a school social worker, including building relationships and communicating with individual students, student groups, parents, teachers, administrators and other school staff. Organize and lead Military Lunch Bunch for groups of military kids each day.

Also... attend professional development opportunities, social work department and special education meetings, and work with social skills groups, leadership team, and teach character development curriculum to classes several times per week. Design and implement interventions for weekly sessions with students, track progress and maintain contact with teachers, staff, and parents., CASA Project/Sunflower Bridge, 2011–

Observe families during monitored exchanges and supervised visits, sometimes involving Protection From Abuse and restraining orders. Maintain case paperwork.

In other words, I... Ensure that all parties stay safe and court orders are followed during visits with family members and record my observations., Stepping Stones Child Advocacy Center, 2012–2012

Completed 400-hour, two-semester generalist practicum at this child advocacy center in Manhattan, Kansas. Served on multi-disciplinary team with law enforcement, child protective services, county attorneys, SANE/SART medical staff, and mental health professionals as part of forensic interview process and coordinated team response to alleged abuse or neglect.

Also... greeted children, families, and multi-disciplinary team personnel upon their arrival, operated interview room equipment/technology, discussed case details with team members and forensic interviewer., So Long Saloon, 2011–2012

Mixed, poured, prepped, greeted, entertained, waited, laughed, lifted, ran, jumped, stood, stacked, scrubbed, scrambled, smiled, sliced, served, washed, dried, counted, apologized, confronted, chopped, multi-tasked, and had a good ol’ time.

Also... tried to run/bike to work as often as I could (3 miles each way) and sink-showered in the bathroom before clocking in. Oh, and acted as unofficial Director of Pepsi (DOP)., KSU College of Ed, 2010–2011

Coordinated elementary education classroom placements by working with university faculty, students, and area teachers. Monitored student records and progress.

In other words, I... Made sure everyone was tuberculosis-free and gathered info from several sources (database + MANY spreadsheets) in order to maximize the educational experiences of pre-service elementary education teachers and the schools they visited., Junction City HS, 2008–2010

Taught algebra and geometry. Nominated for the 2009 Kansas State Department of Education Horizon Award for exemplary first-year teachers. Made .

In other words, I... Attempted to maintain order in rooms with 30+ 15-year-olds. Cracked jokes, freestyle-rapped, refereed Nerf free throw contests, competed against the school security guard/amateur bodybuilder, Tricky D, in a push-up contest, led technology in-service sessions with colleagues, made math videos and presented about them at the local and state levels. Laughed, cried, and learned., Little Apple Day Camp (Manhattan Parks & Rec), 2008

Led summer day camp for 75 K-6 children, 12 camp counselors, and one assistant director. Organized trips and activities. Greeted parents each morning and evening.

In other words, I... Dealt with the reality of the city pool our scheduled daily destination abruptly closing on one of the first mornings of camp. Involved myself in embarrassingly competitive dodgeball matches with kids. Packed cooler upon cooler of milk and juice cartons. Sunscreened so many kids I could deflect sunlight with my palms. Told an unhappy dad we had to remove his six-year-old daughter from camp. Drank two (2) gallons of water a day.
